I liked the shows when roger Ragland and Jackie bushman hosted, now I never watch any of them cause they are like watching a soap opera.

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

I like the shows that have real hunters who manage their own properties. I despise those that just roll into a new camp each episode, get in a stand, and shoot a giant buck on the "first" day. One of my favorites lately is Rival Wild. I've always liked the Primos and Drury shows. Lots of good ones out there, but when they pimp their sponsors worse than Jeff Gordon, I lose interest. CD.

Could've sworn I had already posted this on here, so either I deleted it in my sleep, or someone else did...

I don't get y'alls disdain for hunting shows??? Don't get me wrong, it's goofy how they act like they've done something incredible when they shoot a deer, but I understand the purpose for their shows isn't to illustrate how to hunt. They are 30-min commercials for products and lodges. Nobody gets paid to hunt, they get paid to sell grunt calls and DVDs. It ain't no biggie. You don't sell many products when you film from public land in Alabama, LOL.

One of my favorites is Dan Fitzgerald. He wasn't about just shooting giant bucks. Hell they shot everything on those early videos. Also like Tim Wells. There's no telling what he's gonna kill or kill it with.

I just like the shows from the 90's. Before it all got so crappy. Lots of vhs tapes my dad bought during that time I watch from time to time.

I always thought Buck Mcneely was a hoot.

Jim Shockey has the best shows, he understands how to make a show more about the adventure than the kill.

LOL at the last part, but it's 110% true. I'd do any of the same advertising gimmicks they do if I got to go around and hunt the premier outfitters all year.

I posted on here before how it works, but Ill do it again.

You get PAID by those sponsors. They are the ones that write the checks to put on a show.

THIS IS HOW HUNTING TV CURRENTLY WORKS:

As a Hunting TV show Producer, you BUY the airtime from a channel. Via a contract negotiated with the network you air on.(sportsman, Pursuit, Outdoor Channels)

You usually get one prime time slot, one close to prime slot and one off prime slot. Three airings a week.

You also get 6-10 - 30 second commercial spots during the show, out of twelve possible spots. The network sells the other commercial spots to "Non competitors" of your sponsors.

By the way ALL THAT is negotiable...the number of commercial spots AND your time slots! As well as what you pay the network.

We would negotiate each item.

You have to negotiate to get the best available slots and the
optimum number of commericals, based on what you think you can SELL.

YOU SELL THE COMMERCIAL spots to your sponsors...thats how you get paid.

However it is now WAY more then the commercials you sell them...you sell them a "RATE OF IMPRESSIONS". Meaning how many times you present there logo, product or commercial to the viewers.
They all want a HIGH RATE OF IMPRESSIONS.

We used to give a minimal of 6 impressions per show to each MAJOR (meaning Commercial buying) sponsor. These impressions are :
1.)the commercial shown once,
2.)a logo and audio "tag" during the sponsor list,
3.)their name and website during a credit roll,
4.) a "Bumper" ( graphic of logo w/audio tag leading into or out of a commercial break ( IE: "This segment provided by Thompson Center and Bowtech archery"..with logos)
5.) a "Soft sell" shot of their logo or equipment during the show.
6.) A "mention " of the product each show (IE: That Thompson Center sure dropped him in his tracks, etc)

Thats how it works. They pay a great deal of money per HALF year, anywhere from $20,000 - $50,000 as a major sponsor. Title sponsors pay more.

They also provide "free" product for all your prostaff/hunters. We would get all new guns, bows, and newest camo every year. They provide you with tens of thousands of dollars in gear as well as the money for the spots.
It is a lot of money these sponsors put out in both gear and cash to allow you to make a show!

You also sell "Product sponsor" spots, at $3000 to $7500 per year...just for adding their logo and using their product during the show.

You also sell a "Closed captioning Sponsor" spot for $3000 to $7500 where you add " Close captioning provided by "Hunter Safety System" or whoever.

You have to cater to those sponsors. You are providing them a Product and a service.

That is why you see so much "product selling" on shows. It is part of the game. You have to do it. How blatantly and commercially you do it is up to you. I like "soft selling" type of promotion more then hard sell, but you have to do both.

Just to give you an idea, at $3600 a week for airtime, 26 weeks ( a half year show) is $93,000 dollars! Close captioning about $100 -200 more a week so add another $2600-5200.

Now your at $100,000 a HALF YEAR . Now add editing at $2000-$3000 an episode (+ $ $52,000 to $78,000) and youre looking at a bill of approximately $150,000 to $175,000 for a HALF YEAR of airtime and the production costs.

Now, add the cost of travel, hunts, your salary, all licenses, etc. You are at around $250,000 to produce a HALF YEAR of shows.

You then divide that number based on selling those commercial spots. With 6 Commercial sponsors youd have to get over $35,000 a commercial sponsor and still have to sell an additional $40,000 in "product Sponsor" spots.

The more sponsors, the lower Price per spot, making them easier to sell.

I was a full 10 commercial spots per show kind of producer. Easier to sell 10 at $25,000 each then 6 spots at $35,000 each. Others do it a different way.

The reality is that the SPONSORS, their commercials and the Products are a HUGE (as in GIANT) part of the show.

Without them, all you have is financial ruin...as you sign for that airtime..you have to pay for it.

No sponsors..means a QUARTER OF A MILLION bucks out of your own pocket..every 6 months.

And that is the reality of it.

How successful you are is based on how good your show is, your negotiated airtime, your negotiated time slots, your viewership, meeting your obligations to your sponsors, and success in the field.

It is currently a very risky business as now there are WAY to many shows. Most shows are not making money these days. They either cant acquire the sponsors, cant keep their sponsors, or their shows just suck.

I would highly discourage anyone these days from venturing down that road. We always had secured sponsors BEFORE ever making a show to eliminate any financial risk.

Well...I was just trying to answer the OPs question.

It isnt simple...it is very complicated.

Ive seen people lose their house, their wife and their family by trying to do a show thinking it was a good way to make a living.

It isnt.

It will hurt way more then your head. It can ruin your life if you try it without knowing what it is about.

We were lucky in that we did it BEFORE the glut of shows on now. Also, I was a cameraman and an editor so we did not have to pay production costs of editing.

Also we had connections with our sponsors before we would ever do it. Too much risk otherwise.

Not at all Quailman. Youve always been great on here.

I was just trying to keep it as short as possible too.

Its just a very complicated deal. Much more then folks realize!

Ive seen so many folks think they were going to do a show and sponsors were gonna flock to them. They sign up with the network,..THEN go to find sponsors.

The secret is to have the sponsors BEFOREHAND committed. That way youre using their gear ALREADY and if you do your job and get the harvests and the viewers,..then theyll write the check.

I see guys sign up, then go to the ATA and SHOT show trying to hustle spots...and there are 750 other producers doing the same thing!

The businesses at the SHOT and ATA are trying to get customers from archery, gun, hunting shops, both large and mom and pop's.

They HATE taking time away from SELLING at a trade show that cost them a fortune to talk to 700 wanna be hunting show producers!

Then they end up not getting sponsors, getting desperate, 2nd mortgage on a house...still no sponsors. Lose said house,..of course wife get pissed..."You and youre stupid ideas..see ya.."

Financial ruin, loss of a happy wife/marriage/family etc.

I started when there were very few shows as first a videographer..then an editor. And only because I was a guide/outfitter .
We knew the companies, the heads of them and the industry. Also, in 1999 there werent one TENTH of the shows.

There are 1200 hunting companies ( or were) and only 50 or so shows. Most wanted commercials,..so it was easy to raise cash, sponsors and get supported.

Now,..750 PLUS shows...still around 1200 companies. All are badgered, hounded, approached multiple times each day!

Tough row to hoe now. When I saw the money getting tight, I retired. I did it for a job...not for anything else. My own neighbors did not know what I did.

Now days people think theyll get famous. Heck..most people in the world who DO NOT hunt,..dont know who Lee and Tiffiany or Micheal Waddell are.
