The problems associated with feed wheat are germination rate, noxious weed seeds in the mix etc. There aren't any patent issues to worry about, and I don't think the feds are going to monitor my wheat planting quota.

Feed or seed wheat will both grow and do well.

Feed wheat is not legal to use for top sowing if you are planning a dove shoot over it. The dcnr uses the Extension Service recommendation to determine what is normal Agricultural practice, and it they have decided it isn't normal to plant feed wheat.

If you wanna plant feed wheat in a deer plot, I don't think there is any law against that. I bought some seed wheat this week for $9. I asked the price of feed wheat - $9. He said he got a good buy on the seed wheat and is passing it on to customers. I've got a couple of fields ruined by wild turnips that were in feed wheat my dad bought in the 90s. I've stuck with seed wheat since.

There is a lot more to the 1940s era case than that article mentions. I remember it still being discussed in classes at Auburn in the 70s. There were all sorts of programs the government had back then, and if you signed up for their programs and took their money, you were bound to follow their rules. The farmer thought he had a loophole because he wasn't gonna sell the wheat, he was gonna feed it to chickens and sell them. That info is from memory and may not be exactly right, so please correct if I'm wrong.

I do remember that the farmer was so mad that he sold out and moved to Australia to farm. He came back in a few years; said they were even worse.

None of this has anything to do with the Obama era law about food production. Who knows how it might be enforced.

I may have been thinking of the dove. Reckon how many people planting plots actually check test date. I've caught some trying to sell last years seed to me. It is suppose to be rechecked for germination every so often and retagged. Think its once a year. Generally, last year seed is what the NWTF sells cheap.

I'd like to see the DCNR to try and prove somebody planted feed instead of seed wheat.

Once out of the bag, how are they going to tell the diffence? Hell they have little interest in stopping people from throwing out corn!!!! What makes anybody think they are going to start checking the type of wheat your using!

I think it's more geared towards farmers and dealers selling uncertified crops as "seed".

Like I said earlier, it was a guy at the seed and feed talking about not selling feed wheat for plots (and said someone got busted for selling). For what it's worth, he was the store owner, not some 19-year old kid loading fertilizer in the back of people's trucks. He could have been fibbing though.

It's simple. They will use the same tried and true methods they use to make sure that nobody kills over 5 turkeys or 3 bucks in a season. And since there has never been an arrest made for violating either regulation, then it's clear that these methods are 100% effective.

You do not have to plant certified seed for cover crops. So there's your loophole. I'll use feed wheat all day on cover crop. My head hurts and I'm tired. Another one of these threads I could clear up easily here but I'm not going to.

This NWTF wheat I speak of is not from any other year and is solid ( non deformed) with a orange coating . Maybe some kind of inoculant or something to keep birds from eating

Nope. Just standard fungicide plus maybe insecticide seed treatment. Wheat doesn't need inoculating. And thanks to the EPA we don't have bird repellents anymore
