I bet y'all will be glad when I quit axing boat questions.

Went to the Amazon to buy a Helix 5 so I'd have it here by Friday, and dad gum there's several different ones. Ones has a chirp, one is an SI which I'm guessing is side imaging then there's the DI. What the chirp? Several of you recommended the 5, which one specifically do you have?

Model #'s are 410210, 410220-1, 410190-1 409600-1, 410230-1, 410200-1

CHIRP gives better target separation. My 7 is a DI SI CHIRP GPS

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Are you mounting it at the console or trolling motor?

Wiley I don't see a 7 DI/SI on Hummingbirds website I see 7 DI'S and 7 SI's but not one with both in the name. Does an SI have down imaging too?

Well, I don't know yet. This is all new to me. I can see that the SI would be a huge benefit in structure fishing for crappie, etc... and that would be awful handy at the trolling motor. I think I need one at each. smile

If it has SI that means it has DI and GPS also. I would not spend the extra money on SI at the trolling motor. The benefit is very small to me. I usually run a DI at the tm

Okay so take it easy on me, I'm a novice but why is SI not beneficial at the trolling motor?

And just to be clear a SI is a SI and DI both? As in, I can swap back and forth? If so, that's what I'm going to get.

EDIT: I watched a video, I understand it now. I will be going with SI

Yes, the SI has DI built in that you can select instead of SI when you want. GPS is included with an SI model

I'm hoping to get a good deal on a new/old stock 2017 MEGA 10 in February when the 2018 models come out

I got DI but wish I had SI. But a very respected tournament angler who's won some big stuff told me SI wasn't as important on a grass lake like Guntersville. Just repeating what I was told.
I like looking at the image on DI and find that's all I keep mine turned to.

It's all about how much do you want to spend. I got the regular base model w/ just sonar/gps - no chirp, no DI/SI - and it did everything I needed. I had a previous unit with DI/SI, and while it was really cool to mess with, I generally resorted back to using regular sonar most of the time. Granted most of time with it was in saltwater.

I have SI on my trolling motor and love it. It's useless for pretty pictures but once you use it a while and kind of learn what your looking at it is great.

I like to have my map and DI on my graph at the tm. Unless you have a huge screen it makes it extremely difficult to read SI or at least to me it does. Now my father in law has a Solix 15 at the tm that's a different story

You started it so give us the skinny on that story!

The Solix has a 15 inch screen. You can split it 3 or 4 different ways and still read it with ease

I've been in a boat with 2 Helix 12s and can't imagine being set up with a 15 or 2. That would be some awesome screens!

Having read the comments and recently read about boating accidents and fatalities, I will never have a large screen at my console. I'm running an old Eagle 4" screen that reads the bottom real fast and keeps me out of trouble. I hope it never dies but if it does, I'll replace it with another small unit just for depth at speed readings.

For running I always preferred a flasher. It reacts faster than a screen. At least they used to. flasher were pretty much phased out for more expensive models. The original hummingbird flashers were made from Heath Kits. I saw several in the early 70's the name hummingbird was stuck to them with one of those plastic embossing strips. For you younger guys , you could buy a Heathkit and build just about everything electronic. I knew people that built their first color TV from Heathkits.
