Anyone ever plant feed wheat in food plots? I was curious if it works as good as seed wheat.
Whats a good mix to plant without spending big money on seed. I usually plan Tecomante Maxx Attract but wanted to split it up this year.
The Maxx attract is about 45.00 per acre

Feed wheat will definitely come up just expect a little less germination then seed.

Easy. No. What do you think the difference is? One has been inspected to ensure the best possible germination rate. The other didn't pass the test to be sold as seed. Perhaps you meant to ask if it will perform good enough to get by? That's a different question.

We got feed wheat two years ago and certified seed last year. There was a huge difference in germination with the certified seed. You really don't know until you see the seed heads in the spring. No more feed wheat for us.

Seed heads seen in spring have nothing to do with seed vs feed wheat.

We plant feed wheat in a few of our fields and it came up just fine and looked just like the other regular wheat fields. Just added a few more lbs to the seeding rate.

Same with us. We spent what we saved on feed grade over seed grade and put it toward more lime and fertilizer.

Lots of inert matter and noxious weeds in feed wheat but to each their own. Come mid December you'll be asking where those giant looking turnip plants that cover your field came from and just remember the few $$$ you saved. Don't worry those wild turnips will be back next year also. This I have seen first hand on people land who used feed wheat vs seed wheat. 257's knowledge on this is well beyond mine so he can probably elaborate a little more.

Never had any germination problem with feed wheat or germination of the wild turnips that came with it. I've been trying to get rid of the wild turnips for about 10 years and still counting

OK. I'll admit I'm not an expert so can you elaborate? The following spring after we planted feed wheat we saw hardly any wheat heads. The following spring after we planted certified seed our fields were covered with wheat heads. I took that as evidence that the certified seed germinated better than the feed wheat. What am I missing?

Used to I would have said not much difference maybe just sow the feed wheat a little heavy. But the last several years we have used the NWTF certified and it makes a big difference. Very nice

I can't remember shite! Seems planting feed wheat is illegal. Not a game law. Some other kind of law.

I was assuming it came in some feed wheat. I've got it in two spots this year. I tried to bush hog it this year before it went to seed, don't know if that will help. Possibly could have gotten it in some WGF Sorghum ? It was certified, cleaned seed ?

And don't get me started on the wild turnips. Anything effective on it that won't nuke clover ?

This case is very concerning, and I've read about it before, but completely irrelevant to the topic at hand.

I don't think any of us would argue that planting wheat, in and of itself, is illegal. It's probably in every food plot in the state. So, planting wheat is clearly not illegal.

I should have titled the link differently, perhaps "illegal to plant seed wheat." A few years ago I was a rookie (still am I guess) and was talking to a guy at a seed and feed store up in Marion county. Got to talking about wheat and he said something along the lines of he makes sure he's out of stock on feed wheat during the fall because it was illegal to be planted (only for feed) and of course hunters are after it since it's a little cheaper. I think he said another feed and seed store had gotten busted for it. Don't really see why he'd lie about it, but could have been. I researched it a little bit years ago just out of curiosity. It seems like I found more relevant articles in the past. I'll see what I can dig up, but the general idea was something along the lines of big corporations and the government.

That said, I also think this would kind of fall into those crazy laws (if true) that even law enforcement are unaware of or ignore. Kind of like how it apparently it is illegal to sell peanuts in Lee County after sundown on Wednesday in Alabama.

Here is the old thread with a lot of good links and the experts (not me) chiming in.

Wheat
