Ok guys, what's your opinion on these things? Brand, size, how they work?

Buddy of mine just started selling Traeger. Has lots of good things to say about it. He uses one at home.

"Cull" is just another four letter word...

Love mine. Have had a traeger for 5-6 yrs. Mine is the 075 model which has plenty of cooking space, I've done 4 10# butts at a time.

Only con I have is it depends on electricity.

They have several components that make it work. A pellet hopper, thermostat, feed auger, fire box, glow igniter and a fan.

It'll use the thermostat to control the auger speed that feeds the pellets from the hopper to the fire box while igniting it the first few minutes of operation. Inside the fire box it has small holes where the fan forces air in from underneath. Most cases it'll hold within 5*+/- of set point. Of all the cooks I've done I've had two issues. Both were my fault, I forgot to fill the hopper with pellets one time, the second I had the thermostat probe get real dirty and wasn't reading correctly.

Stepdad has a camp chef and I like it,just put pellets in the hopper, set the temp and let it ride,no flare ups and does a good job smoking the meat,I saw one in Walmart the other day marked down to $340,normally $499

I recently switched from gas to charcoal...couldn't imagine having to rely of having enough pellets, with the charcoal grill, I can just burn wood, if I don't have enough charcoal....

A 15-20lb bag of pellets will cook for a long time, they last a lot longer than a bag of charcoal,I would think you could get 20+ of cook time out of a bag of pellets

I've often heard the downside to pellet grills is that you can't sear a steak. Well, this brand you can and you can get into one for around $350. this video is from the company.

This is true. To sear you need another grill or I have the Camp Chef Woodwind with sear box. It's pricey but worth every penny.

You can do the same at almost one third the price with a PitBoss from Walmart.

IMO, I think they're perfect for someone who wants to grill/smoke but doesn't want to fool w/gas, charcoal, etc. or tend to a grill that much ... I'm actually trying to get my sister & BIL to buy into one ...

I don't own one ('cause I *DO* like to fool w/gas, charcoal, etc. LOL) but I've heard from friends of Camp Chef grills that they're awesome...

To me, the cons are price & electricity

Had a Green Mountain Grill two years now and love it. We quit using our Big Green Egg and gas grill.

They are great unless you enjoy messing with the fire/coals.

Thanks for all the input guys. Pulled the trigger on a green mountain grill last week. Have cooked chicken and pork chops so far, it was the best pork chops we ever ate. Gonna try some ribs this weekend.
