Anyone have any funny or strange stories about turkey hunting bankhead forest? I see turkey on the green fields sometimes but have not shot one yet. I see one or more rattlesnakes it seems like on every trip. Id love to hear some stories if possible. Thanks

I saw a guy ride by last year on a smaller dirt bike with a milk crate strapped to the back. He had had his vest on, cased gun over shoulder, and a dead gobbler in the milk crate.

Ha thats funny. Sounds like he really wanted to hunt. That place is covered up with rattlesnakes. I kept hearing about how bad the copperheads were around there. I havent seen any copperheads but a ton of rattlesnakes. Lots crossin the roads. Walked rite by a 1 footer and didnt see it. Turned around and took a step while lookin doen and seen him layin 2 inches away from my ankle. He was coiled up on top of johnson grass that was laid over. He never moved. Made me so sick that i just went home. I didnt have snake boots. Thought i was looking extremely good but walked rite by him

I've heard about a couple guys making their rounds through various national forests with a dirt bike.
Red bomber helmet?

I hunt publicland 99% of the time and Black Warrior is the only WMA I havent killed a bird on. Granted I don't hunt it as much, the birds there arent as vocal as most turkeys in our area. Every year I say when I get my 4th I'll try to take my 5th there but I havent been a glutton for punishment lately.

I have killed a few up there but this best describes my experiences with that place. Seems to be plenty of birds some years but they are very finicky and not very vocal.

Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

Use to hunt there a lot, till life hits head on......just saying my mornings started with a walk in at least an hour before the whippoorwills started.
