Of all my soil type, sand does the worst. I'm not saying its no good and deer want eat in it. Just harder to keep pH maintained and plants healthy.
Don't know how big of an area you are talking but don't rule out summer crops(corn) if they can make it to winter.
Some people, like myself, get into this and take it as a challenge. Great sense of accomplishment if you succeed. Remember, trial and error, keep good records (VERY IMPORTANT), soil test regular, and be patient. Its a long journey.

Take a pic of the whole plot as well as the moss. For what it’s worth, this is what I’d do…………
1) Pull a soil sample 2) Keep things simple for now…..Lightly till up the top of the soil this fall and plant a heavy seeding rate of pure cereal rye. 3) Add the P & K according to test. Add the lime in small doses for now....maybe every 6 months to a year. Pamper the cereal rye this fall and next spring by adding nitrogen every 6-8 weeks starting at planting. Something like 50 lbs/ac of 33-0-0 at planting…..100 lbs at Chirstmas…..and 50 lbs around early March right when spring hits. Help the cereal rye produce as much biomass and root structure as we can get out of it.
This is gonna be the initial step in turning things toward a different long term approach like I was talking about previously. Don’t worry about trying to grow a summer crop next year. Come in and mow the rye down in late May to early June and add another small dose of lime and N….it will help any natural summer vegetation to thrive. We just want plants to be putting down roots below ground and growing more biomass above ground. Roots and OM is what I think will begin to alleviate your issues. Grow as much summer biomass as you can produce and next fall try a throw n mow planting again of cereal rye…..this time try adding in some crimson clover and see how does.
