Again I'm not good with snake ID but he looks to have a big head not slinder. Only thing that I would be able to tell is he has round pupils. Anything else to ID him as not poisonous?

Here's a good approach to snake ID. There are only 6 poisonous snakes here in AL. Three types of rattlers, the brightly colored coral snake, and the copperhead and cottonmouth.

You only have to learn what those 6 look like. Then when you see a snake in the woods, bushes, yard, etc, just cross-reference what it looks like against those 6. If it's not any of those 6, then it's a harmless snake that you've stumbled onto and you are no way in danger.

The brown snake above clearly isn't a rattlesnake, or a coral snake. That eliminates 4 out of the 6 right there. Now, if we can just rule out if it's a copperhead or cottonmouth, we are in the clear. It doesn't have the hourglass shaped brown crossbands across it's back, so it isn't a copperhead. And it's not a cottonmouth, because it doesn't have the dingy greenish fuller crossbands across it's back, and it just doesn't look mean as hell.

So if you don't know it's a brown snake by looking at it, just going through that quick little thought stream, we've eliminated all 6 of the snakes that could send us to the hospital... and we can breathe a little easier.

I was waiting on that one...

There's only 2 kind in my book. Dead or alive. I'm going to rule out 1 real quick when I see it.

That's all well and good, but he isn't in Alabama. He is in the Louisiana swamps

Those 6 I mentioned (barring pets that get turned loose, or escapees from the zoo) I'm pretty sure are universal to the southeast. Same 6 are found in NC, SC, GA, so there may be an add-on the further west you go, but by all means take a break off porn and do a little constructive google research and check the venomous snakes that are endemic to your region/area... learn what they look like (my ten year old is very good at ID-ing bad snakes from harmless ones) and then customize that line of thinking to rule out the potentially dangerous ones from the ones that are not so dangerous.

Then, at least you won't panic and wind up shooting your own foot off trying to kill a 6-inch harmless brown snake that is barely wider than a blade of grass (see initial photos).
