didn't deer hunt. I think he killed one deer in his life. He was a bird hunter, mostly dove, some quail and duck/goose. He used to go dove hunting on Thursday afternoon, first and second season. He would get brother randy and I out of school to retrieve doves when we were maybe 7-8 years old.
I read everything about any hunting when I was very young. I drew a permit to bowhunt Oak Mtn Park in 1965(I think). Dad drove me out there to hunt and waited in the car...two days worth. I didn't really appreciate that sacrifice back then, I do now.
He joined a club in Perry County at Suttle just so we would have a place to deer hunt. He went only once that I can remember.
I thank him for helping to instill the love of hunting and fishing in me at a very early age. RIP dad.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

Well said. I'm 38 and realizing the sacrifices my dad did for me as a young hunter. I made a C in 4th grade and I couldn't go that season. That thought me. He limped on crutches a whole turkey season when I was 9 just to take me and kill a few. We're all at lake Martin gathered up now for the week and age is catching up with him fast.
Quietly killing turkeys where youre not!!! My tank full of give a fraks been runnin on empty I'm the paterfamilias

I use the stuff my dad taught me every time I hunt and fish. Along with all the stuff my grandfather's taught me. Great memories. Would do anything to have one more trip with them.

My Dad would take me hunting almost every time I wanted. He would let me kick every deer out of the woods, but used it to teach me lessons. I was ruining his chances to kill a deer. We have leased some land that nobody would consider easily huntable together. I'm actually kind of happy it is raw and has no roads or plots. We are getting to work on things together, and scout together. I wanted to get this land because, I'm at the age now where I think about when may be my last chance to spend time with him.
You can take a man's life, but you can't take his freedom.

Great post Mr. Fred. It sure brought back memories squirrel hunting with my dad back in the 60's as a kid. I had kill duty as he called it. He would flush the squirrel with the 22 and I had to shoot it out of the tree. Oh the memories. Thanks for sharing.
I came, I saw, so I killed them all......Vern

I remember my dad taking my brother and I "deer" hunting. Dad carried his Browning, my brother had a single shot 20 gauge, and I had..... a Daisy BB gun (the kind that had the BB's that rattled REALLY LOUD in the barrel!). Looking back, I realize that we had a snowballs chance in hell of even seeing a deer! Sure makes me appreciate now the time my dad put in to take us "hunting!" This is one of my favorite pics - it's the only hunting pic I have of me, dad, and my son. Like so many of y'all, I'd move a mountain to spend one more afternoon with my dad.
Jesus... I hope you know Him personally like I do.
