didn't deer hunt. I think he killed one deer in his life. He was a bird hunter, mostly dove, some quail and duck/goose. He used to go dove hunting on Thursday afternoon, first and second season. He would get brother randy and I out of school to retrieve doves when we were maybe 7-8 years old.

I read everything about any hunting when I was very young. I drew a permit to bowhunt Oak Mtn Park in 1965(I think). Dad drove me out there to hunt and waited in the car...two days worth. I didn't really appreciate that sacrifice back then, I do now.

He joined a club in Perry County at Suttle just so we would have a place to deer hunt. He went only once that I can remember.

I thank him for helping to instill the love of hunting and fishing in me at a very early age. RIP dad.

I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

Well said. I'm 38 and realizing the sacrifices my dad did for me as a young hunter. I made a C in 4th grade and I couldn't go that season. That thought me. He limped on crutches a whole turkey season when I was 9 just to take me and kill a few. We're all at lake Martin gathered up now for the week and age is catching up with him fast.

I use the stuff my dad taught me every time I hunt and fish. Along with all the stuff my grandfather's taught me. Great memories. Would do anything to have one more trip with them.

My Dad would take me hunting almost every time I wanted. He would let me kick every deer out of the woods, but used it to teach me lessons. I was ruining his chances to kill a deer. We have leased some land that nobody would consider easily huntable together. I'm actually kind of happy it is raw and has no roads or plots. We are getting to work on things together, and scout together. I wanted to get this land because, I'm at the age now where I think about when may be my last chance to spend time with him.

Great post Mr. Fred. It sure brought back memories squirrel hunting with my dad back in the 60's as a kid. I had kill duty as he called it. He would flush the squirrel with the 22 and I had to shoot it out of the tree. Oh the memories. Thanks for sharing.

I came, I saw, so I killed them all......Vern

When I was 5 or 6 my dad started taking me hunting every weekend. I mean wake me up and tote me kinda thing. I remember ever bit off it! We'd sit up against a tree and I'd either play with sticks or just go back to sleep. On weekends we didn't hunt he woke me up and got me dressed to go in the shop at 6 to build furniture. I new what every tool was and could hand him whatever he asked for. Now having kids of my own I understand! Every weekend I'm sending my 5yr old for a tape, glue, nail gun.... etc.

Great thought, thanks for sharing. Made me think of all the things my Dad did as well. He's been gone 17 years.

Thanks for sharing. Sounds like my dad and I. Still remember first time he left me alone while squirrel hunting. He said "sit by this tree and I'll be back shortly". An hour later I'm squalling and he comes running back thinking I was murdered lol

I remember my dad taking my brother and I "deer" hunting. Dad carried his Browning, my brother had a single shot 20 gauge, and I had..... a Daisy BB gun (the kind that had the BB's that rattled REALLY LOUD in the barrel!). grin Looking back, I realize that we had a snowballs chance in hell of even seeing a deer! Sure makes me appreciate now the time my dad put in to take us "hunting!" rofl

This is one of my favorite pics - it's the only hunting pic I have of me, dad, and my son.

Like so many of y'all, I'd move a mountain to spend one more afternoon with my dad.

Great post - ya'll have got my allergies acting up. When I was younger I had no idea how valuable those times with my Dad were or the importance of that love for the outdoors that he was instilling within me. It sure would've been easier for him to hunt without a noisy clumsy kid tagging along but he chose to spend those days with me. Now at 40, that's where I find peace & it got me through a lot of rough days after I lost him. I can't go in the woods and not think about something he taught me or a great memory we made. It's a gift that they give us - one that stays long after they're gone.

my dad did not hunt, I guess I got my love of hunting from my mothers side, before I could drive my mother would drive me to the woods after school and I would hunt till dark, she would pick me up and we would go home. THANKS MOM !

It was my grandfather that gave me my love of the outdoors. Dad's diabetes problems kept him mostly confined to lesser activities.
