It's expensive when compared to gravel. Milled asphalt is great to reheat and lay down for driveways, parking areas, etc. Reheating it gives it cohesion when it's laid and rolled. As time goes by, especially in the heat of summer, you can spray a little diesel over it and continue packing it with vehicle weight, and eventually it's as good or very nearly as good as newly laid asphalt. I wish I had 3 or 4 big dumptruck loads right now!

Several years back, when I looked into it, it was about $650 for a load...gravel was about $425, IIRC.

Good stuff, but like stated above it's expensive. I went with concrete wash, and been pleased, but i hear it's expensive now also

There are a lot of pros and cons. The value to us as a manufacturer is about 35% of the sales price of the new material. So if we sell asphalt for $100/tn the RAP is worth $35/tn. It makes a really good road bed or subgrade but you really have to pour the water to it to get compaction. It's generally not cheaper than gravel or limerock, especially in quarrey rich places like central and northern Alabama.
not sure what the best way to handle them is but they shouldnt be on tv and gettn married and raisin kids

I don't know, I'm mostly in Florida and the Mid Atlantic states. 15 years ago it was $8/tn FOB the quarry.

Crush and run used to be a good alternative before milling became popular.

Crush and run used to be a good alternative before milling became popular. I've had about 70 tons delivered to our farm in Arley within the last year at about $375 per load over two loads(average). Served our purpose well. After some rain and driving on it, it's just like concrete. Except it never cracks.

There's a big pile of it for sale at the Jemison exit. I saw that the last time I was home. Some DOT's won't let you use RAP in the friction course, only structure courses. So if there was a recent job near Jemsion where they just milled and resurfaced with friction, there probably wasn't as much need to haul it back depending on where their plant is. We haul back every ounce we mill and keep about 300K tons stockpiled at all times. We'd buy more land if we ran out of room to stockpile it.

What is milling? I need to redo my driveway with something when you see the big machines on a highway project with a conveyor belt sticking out the back end, loading material into a truck, they are milling up the asphalt with what is basically a huge grinder with carbide teeth. They remove a layer of asphalt that can then have a new layer put on top. The recycled asphalt can then be used by itself or re-added to certain type mixes to save a little asphalt.
