If the same scenario happened right now, we'd all be speaking German and Japanese

America was a different Country when WWII occurred. Everyone was Patriotic. All families had members in the service. Families attended Church and prayed at meals. Now everyone is in a hurry. No prayers in public. The crybabies complain anytime someone prays on public property. It's a different world of spoiled and entitled people. Hacksaw Ridge was a very inspiring movie.

I don't know about this....
So if you had the opportunity to kill the enemy and you didn't shoot one guy....or throw that grenade and kill a couple of them....
and they walked around the hill and setup a Type 92 how many American lives did it take to silence that machine gun position in 1945? What about a mortar team? Back when you were expendable. And you didn't have an Apache to call on the radio. You took a rifle and you went up that hill anyway. Or if they were shooting mortars zero'ed in on your position what did you do? You kept going.
20? 30? Maybe 50? dead... You tell me. My grandfather said they were dragging the dead/wounded past them on Pelilieu as fast as they could get to the front. He said a pilot later told him it looked like an army of ants with two paths going either direction.
Y'all ever been in a Combat Zone? I can assure you one thing... This guy is the last person on earth I'd want with me standing on a mountain in Afghanistan. I'm too interested in staying alive. I'm being serious I'm not sure I could allow him to go with me.

Honest question Goat:
Would you prefer to have 10 guys with you, all armed and fighting, or have 11 guys with you and 1 man is doing nothing but patching the other 10's wounds?
I can see wanting only essential people in a small group where each additional person may blow your cover... but in a large scale attack where stealth is out the window, how is an extra guy who stays focused on saving the injured hurting anything?

I'm pretty sure all those men he saved were glad he was on that hill.

Serious answer: enlist and get sent into combat then come back and answer that question for yourself.
If it doesn't bother you that's fine I'm just offering a different perspective.
Whatever can go wrong will go wrong. It is down to you and him on the left flank and the enemy is advancing. You glad you brought him? He's got your buddy's chest wound patched up but he's pinned down with you.

Goatkiller you do add a different perspective to view his story from but no one can take away from the fact that he wanted to serve our country and wasn't so much a conciensous objector as some thought, he just didn't want to kill. Not many men can say they ran through a wall of lead to save so many men He Can. I've been in situations where I was fired upon several times and I'd have him next to me any day.
