The guys that are not playing in The Open are over in opelika. -19 is the leader with another day to play. Either the course is playing waaaay easy (only 6 or so players are over par) or some of these guys need to be across the pond. I figured the winner would shoot 12 or 13 under. Didn't think I'd be half way right.

I.can't remember which 18 we played there several years ago but it was not a difficult course. I know we shot 16 under in a scramble and lost by a shot or two.

The Lake Course is the one they're playing and is more open with the giant greens. IMO it's not tough for them with the aircraft carrier fairways to shape-move-place shots, but the putting is the toughest for them. Champion Bermuda greens that I believe finally have come into their own, so the greens are rolling pretty well.
I played there spring 2016 and it's a fun course. Having the Tour event there also I think has really helped because they have done a lot of trimming of limbs and schmutz, opened things up, cleaned up some areas, and the result is a Tour-caliber course the public gets to play.
I haven't played the Links course there but last year a course marshall said they had removed "thousands" of trees and opened it up, too. I find "thousands" to be improbable but more likely several hundred. He said the Links course is closed during the Tour event and used for private rounds among sponsors, Tour officials and other special needs.
Didn't go to the Barbasol this year, though. First one I've missed in several years. It's a fun event and if you like watching the guys, the best days to go are Thursday and Friday when NO ONE is there. I don't know what the crowds are like at other PGA events the first two days, but Alabama never turns out for the PGA, LPGA or Champions events on Thursday or Friday.

I guess everybody has their on opinion, but when I was a pretty strong 9 hdcp. at Saugahatchee, I never broke 90 at GN. This was playing 'em down and putting them all out.

If you were a strong nine at Saugahatchee, best I can remember that course, that's pretty doggone good. Rather tight track with placement requirements?
We live two miles from the RTJ Hampton Cove courses. I think one issue with the giant fairways and greens the RT Jones liked was it gives you a false sense of security. "Just knock it out there and you'll be OK" isn't always the best strategy for golf. It's easy to get lulled into that mentality on all his Trail courses.

GN was a little bit mental. Once you play it chitty a few times, that's what you "know" will happen again.

It's funny how some (or all, I guess) of the RTJ courses have at least one hole that you look at and say, "Where the hell did this one come from?"
I love most of the back nine of GN. On the front, No. 6 is just boring and like "Eh, I guess we need a hole here." Hiking that back nine is a workout, though, especially right now in the heat.

They obviously reversed the front and back since I played it. Saw Charles Howell drive the green all 4 days at #7. (NCAA) He made 1 birdie and 3 eagles as well as I can remember. It was playing about 250.

I wish the RTJ courses would hold more NCAA events, but I know that's lost revenue for however many days. Still, would be cool. H'Cove has hosted the OVC women's conference tourney the past few years. Fun to see their setups.

Agree Turkey. And the par 3 was about as much fun playing golf as anything I've played. Not sure what kind of shape it's in. After 2 shoulder surgeries, I "may" be ready to play again. I haven't played in 7 or 8 years. BTW, my son Patrick worked there some when he was in school.

I haven't played in 7 or 8 years. BTW, my son Patrick worked there some when he was in school. I was working there when the NCAA tourney was there and watched Howell play that week. Helped do a lot of the work to try and lengthen the course. I'm guessing Fall of 99 thru 2001-02. When I left they had a foreman working on the par 3 course, and he was doing a great job. It was in really good shape at that time.
