Set 8 traps yesterday at the farm after cutting grass. One beaver and one coyote today. Not bad. Didn't have a chance to check them until after lunch. Both succumbed to the heat before I got there. Missed another coyote and another beaver. Maybe I can get them tonight.

Nice work. Curious about the beaver, know you mentioned they were going to a corn field, was this a dry ground set or at a crawl out ? I'm obviously new to catching beavers but had been led to believe they need to be on drowning setups when using foothold traps.

Tell me about your set

The corn field is about 80 yards from the Little Cahaba River. There are two very well worn trails where they come from the river and get corn stalks and drag back to the water. All I did was find an incline in the trail near the tree line at the edge of the field and just set a trap in the trail. I used the incline as a spot where they would put more foot pressure in the trail and I put a small stick across the trail so they would step over the stick onto the pan. Conibear's at the water line would be automatic in these locations but I'm having to get my nephew and parents to check the traps a couple of days this week and they don't need to be on the edge of the water.

They can be caught and held anywhere. Drowners are a preferred method but you adapt to whatever the situation requires. This one was caught at a fence crawl under going into a city park.

Thanks Hank. Some threads on Trapperman and Sullivan's led me to believe that they would pull out if not quickly dispatched.

Your welcome!

Pull outs are possible no matter what set you make or how many precautions you take!

The only perfect set is the one with meat in it when you run traps!

Wade make sure the stepping stick you're using is far enough off of your jaws that it isn't getting pulled into the trap when it fires.

What pan tension are you running? The reason I ask is you said you had 2 misses the first night and pull out yesterday. If you're pan tension is set too light and the trap is firing before the animal gets it's weight down on the pan it'll cause them to pull that foot. That can cause shallow catches that are easier to pull out or misses!

Thanks Hank. I have the sticks back enough I think. I really don't know the pan tension. I have not modified it from when I got them in. I might increase the trail tensions a little to see if that helps. Might add some conibears to the mix too 😀

KBush,

Here is a pic of the trail between the river and the field. I think a couple of misses have the beaver skittish right now.
