Watch out for the 99, 00, and 01 4.0 straight 6 motors in Cherokees. The 0331 cylinder heads are more prone to cracking. If you have to replace it get one from pull a part that has TUBY cast into the head directly beneath the oil filler cap.

I had a 99. The tranny broke and then the head blew. I let it go on to a new home.

The xjs with the 4.0 are good trucks. There is a fine one for sale here in Mobile it looks like it's on 33's or maybe even 35's. I can get some pictures and send you their phone number if you were interested is just up the street from me. But it has really been gone through and restored it may be more than you want to spend for a hunting truck. Lmk and I'll ride up the road and get some pics and info for you.

I drove a '96 with a 4.0 when I worked at the S.O. Spent all day every day in the woods on it, hunting dope. Only time I ever stuck it was crossing a creek with fairly steep banks, and the winch saved me, then. Solid vehicle, solid engine and transmission, I never had any trouble with it.

Had a Cherokee, '97 with a straight 6 cyl. Had it for years, no problems at all. Hunting, fishing, drove it though snow, back roads, work every day, never missed a lick. Daughter in college, she needed a car, so I got another one, gave the Jeep to her. Dang near broke me on repairs. I honestly don't think any of it was her fault. It was sensors, controllers, you name it, couple hundred $$ here, 500 there. I was on first name basis with the mechanic, met him several times in person, don't think he was screwing with me, and would save the parts until the next time I visited. I was thinking my ex had a scale model and was using it like a voodoo doll!!

fwiw, the 4.0 is an inline 6, not a v6, but they are fantastic motors. find one with a manual transmission if possible. Ford made the 4.0 V6. Had one in a '92 Explorer, it was a good one, too.
