Tonight. My brother and I got out. He loves bright trick worm. He was throwing weightless bubble gum trick worm. I was swimming a worm. He started getting bit and I swapped for one of his trick worms. Got a bite or 2 but couldn't stick em. I think next time I stick to what I have more confidence in. Also, thinking of adding real light weight to my trick worm next time. We were in about 7 feet of water throwing up into 4 or 5 around boat docks.

Love bubblegum, merthiolate, and schoolbus yellow trick worms. If you want a faster presentation, buy some hook shank weights and put one on the hook or buy some belly weighted hooks. I do this with trick worms and senkos.

Nail weights my friend. Plus I use a "speed tail" design which dramatically increases the number of bites over a standard trick worm.

Here's the bad part. He showed up spur of the minute and went rummaging through my stuff to find the pink worms he had give me. I never threw em because I thought no self respecting Guntersville bass would bite em. Mitch really liked my Hammer rod

If you want a faster fall, get the Zoom Magnum Trick Worms. They're thicker and have a faster fall rate. Can upsize your hook, too, if desired. I fish them without a weight and either let them just fall slowly with gentle pops or really give it a good snap and then let it fall.
Gambler's trick worms seem to have a little more air or something, maybe they're not as dense, as Zoom.
Nothing beats the original Danny Joe trick worm from the earliest days. Those were great.

Clem you are talking about two different things. Danny Joes are FLOATING worms. I think gamblers are too. Trick worms are made to sink. 300 who the hell uses a wire hook on a trick worm? that's asking for trouble. Big bass are very susceptible to trick worms whenever they are shallow. The best places to use them are around trash, boat docks and wood(stumps, laydowns) I've seen guys fish them on 10 lb test. I use 15 or 20 big game depending on the lake. On clear waters like Smith, Marin or Tuscaloosa Seaguar Fluorocarbon. No trick worm is as good as the 8' Crme scoundrel. The very best guys at fishing this way are from the Tuscaloosa area. The Wormshack was where I bought mine. order online

When the water is clear I move it fasterI never stop moving it. More of an impulse strike. Then the line is less crucial , as long as it clear.

I always heard that you should fish trick or floating worms with light wire hooks. So that's what I did until learning the size-weight of a hook can affect things.
Perch is right about trick and floating being different.
Or you could use an Owner 2/ or 3/ wacky hook in the middle or so of a trick worm with subtle twitches and see how that works.

Often when they seem to stop biting a trick worm you can rig it wacky style and resume getting bites.

This post reminds me of something I think all the time... I am always amazed at stuff I used to catch a truckload of fish on, that I no longer use because it doesn't work anymore, only to hear stories of other people wearin' em out with it. I can't catch a fish to save my life on a shakey head anymore, but apparently everybody and their mama still is.

Yep. I think the same about spinning rods, which many of us grew up fishing with and caught the fool out of fish with.
Then we got older and the baitcaster was cool and how to be a "real fisherman." So we put down the "fairy stick" and "little fish baits" and got our asses whipped sometimes by guys with spinning rods, lighter line, smaller baits, more patience and bigger fish.
I don't overlook anything anymore. I have favorite lures and tactics, but my mostest favoritest thing to do is catch fish on whatever they bite.

On spinning rods what gets me is bass guys mostly use baitcasters. But you get down to the coast, where fish should theoretically be larger, and everyone is using spinning rods. Spent a little time on pier last couple days. I'm guessing spinning rods outnumber baitcasters 50:1.

It's simple goober. There is nothing for the salt fish to wrap your line around like in fresh water. Just wondering have you seen the reels charter boat Capt's use? They aren't spinning reels. Level wind is a stronger reel. While on some boats I'm sure they use spinning reels for some things. They troll with level winds.

Bigger spools, more line on the salty spinning rods.
A bunch of the BASS and FLW guys use spinning rods with different lures. Iaconelli was using a drop shot for bedding fish in 2006 on Guntersville, and at the last BASS event Jonathan VanDam was throwing some kind of worm or something on a spinning rod. They load up and sling a mile.

I probably catch more on spinning reels than I do baitcasters. Folks would laugh, but I regularly throw a 1/16oz flick shake wacky rig in the grass with a spinning setup.

Oh yeah. I know that. But every Pier fisherman got a spinning. Wind is the main reason we used a lot of spinning reels on the coast. Wasn't unusual to fish in 10-15kt winds and it was a real pain to try to throw a baitcaster in that mess.
Ya'll are just overthinking it now

I read your post, but you don't really swim a trick worm. You twitch and let sink. It is a comepletely different game.
