I've got a ruger American in 30-06 and with 150s and 165s it's not bad at all. It's funny how different guns have different felt recoil. I'd expect that little lightweight ruger to kick a bunch harder than a wood stocked gun because it literally weighs about 7.5 pounds scope and all.

For what it's worth a 165 grainer out of the 06 will kill everything in north America. I've piled up a bunch of whitetails with a 150gr out of a 308.

Bullet weight can play a significant role in felt recoil. Another factor is the shape of the stock. I have a couple of custom wood stock guns, one in 300 win mag the other a 35 Whelen AI. Both have a steel butt plate but the stocks are shaped different. The recoil formulas suggest the 300 WM would recoil more but it's not too hard on the shoulder. The 35 whelen will crush your shoulder and induce flinching after a couple of shots.

It's hard to believe but I could shoot the the same loads in my Kimber Montana 7mm-08 that I shot in my Sako 75 7mm-08 and the Montana had significantly less felt recoil, even though the Sako was 2 lbs heavier.

I don't care for them, but a muzzle break would solve your problem.

I agree, stock design is a huge part

Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!
