How do you train a dog to not run deer? I've read online about putting deer scent on a mouse trap and letting the dog find it, just wondering what you guys that have squireel dogs do to avoid this.
My pup hasn't struck a deer yet but my buddy got a pup from the same litter and he'll run em... Just trying to be proactive and break a habit before it starts

E collar, or like my granddad did with his beagles. Pepper them with field shot when they are running a deer.

Ill be picking up a track and train unit in a couple of weeks from another member here. Just looking for old school tips that are tried and true

The best way is keep them busy with squirrel or Coons. If they are left to their own devices, they will chase game. If they chase deer, keep on with the squirrels and they will not chase nothing but. It's in their blood to be squirrel dogs and if trained, they don't want anything else. With your pup it should come on like a light switch at a year and half old. Pup's will not get it until they mature enough to understand.

peppering a dog is a good way to ruin one too. You want her to be really excited when the gun goes off, not hurt. imho

I've taken him to a few parks around but he loves people and doesn't always come back when he goes to visit somebody... That's mainly why I'm going ahead and getting a GPS w/e collar

I knew an old man that was a big into rabbit hunting, he's long since passed on. If one of his beagles ran deer , he would take a cape, put it along with the dog in a plastic 55 gallon drum, and down a hill they went. Needless to say his beagles only ran deer once. Crude but very effective way to break them from running deer

I don't have to worry about exposure to squirrels, my property is hard wood bottoms. Man, text me some pic's my family loves them pups.

The ones that did run a deer got a second dose, wearing the hot collar at same time. They usually came out of the drum covered in poo and hating the smell of deer. Trust me it works.

we used to ride dirt roads on a buddies farm and when we saw a deer we turned them out if they struck and tried to run them hit them at 4 on the shock collar. we had one female that if she jumped a deer would come back to us and let us know ahe wasnt running it
We will burn that bridge when we get there
