What is like the bare minimal someone should be trying to turkey hunt? I have only been turkey hunting a couple times in my life, but a friend of mine said one person needs at least 300-400 acres of land to really turkey hunt. I figure it just depends if there are birds there and if they stay toward the center of the property or toward the edge.

You just need enough to legally park the truck. LOL. Seriously i've killed a lot of turkeys on 40 acres. You just need the right property, where the turkeys want to be. My club is only 400 acres, but we only kill turkeys on about 120 of those 400. I have 80 acres at my house that i kill 2-3 on every year. It just depends on the habitat. Ideally you would want at least 300-400 acres.

as much as you can afford. you can kill them on small tracks and large tracks I just need roaming around space. I like to have options if the first, second or third spots don't produce. I'd say 1k minimum. whether you have 2 or three tracks

Technically there is no minimum but I want as much land as possible. I hunted WMA last year almost exclusively and while public land has its drawbacks I LOVED having thousands of acres to play with.

Blum pretty much covered it. I wouldn't hesitate to lease 40 acres of hardwoods if it was surrounded by mostly young pines. Small tracts can produce depending upon the land surrounding it. But there are also 300 acre tracts that I probably wouldn't lease if it was the wrong type of habitat.

You can never have too much. Our club is 3,000 acres but I still hear lots of birds on the neighbor's property that I can't hunt.

I will agree that around 300 seems about right. I have 320 and we have killed 3-4 birds a year off it for years and have never seemed to knock em back noticeably. Plenty of birds gobbling after season. Pretty much all of my place is pretty good habitat, except for 20 acres of c cut, the remaining 100 acres of Pines are all thinned once, many twice. The rest of the place is native woodlands on a big hill and along a creek which runs diagonally through the place. You can also hunt two pretty easily due to the lay-out.

One of the best places I ever had was only 100 acres. I prefer a lot more tho.

The smallest tract of land i've ever hunted for turkey was 640 acres. Of the 640, the birds all congregated in about a 50 acre patch. That land was good for 2 or 3 every year. It wont take much if its where they want to be. I've never hunted a property where the birds were evenly distributed out throughout the whole tract. Maybe one here and 2 there.

Good answers in this thread. I will say that I once killed a gobbler on opening day
7 years in a row off the same 2 acres.

Now that 2 acres is in the middle of roughly 5000 acres that we hunt.

It's a crossroads in big pine timber on the top of a big ridge and it's just where
they want to be in the early season.

You can kill turkeys off small places. If they aren't there one week doesn't mean
they won't be there later on.

Having said that, get as much land as you can.

All good answers. Some of the best properties I have hunted have been small, just always holds birds. But also hunted some places with thousands of acres and not have much turkeys.

Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

Turkey hunting land is just like money - you never have enough. No matter how much you get, you always think you need more. See my signature line. smile

From all the good replies you've already gotten you can see that how much you need to hunt varies greatly, but in a club setting you need a lot more land per member for turkey than for deer. I think that's about the only rule you can apply.

If you have the right 1 acre of land, 1 acre is all you need to kill a turkey or two every year.

But the more land the better.

Blum nailed it with the "parking the truck" suggestion! thumbup I'll add, it's much easier to get free hunting from the old man/woman that ownes a few acres here and there, than it is with the big timber man tracts. Land map GIS has killed more turkeys for me, than my calling abilities, for sure.
