I see Millenium stands for sale at various places for under $100.

Just get one and leave it there and take the steps. Chain it to the tree. Not everyone is dishonest and carrying around both steps and bolt cutters. Especially if you are where you should be which is far enough back in there nobody else is around and nobody would want to carry it back anyway.

No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Is it not illegal to leave climbers and lock-ons hanging on trees in public land? I always thought this was the case.

It is illegal, also not supposed to use anything that damages the tree;ie spikes/screw in steps.

I tote my summit in and out every trip, with my backpack and bow.

I just went back to read the language of the law and it states it is unlawful to do as follows:

"(aa) To damage or remove any artifacts, trees, firewood, crops, or other plants, dirt, gravel or sod without legal authorization.

(bb) To erect any permanent tree stand or install any screw-in type steps, spikes, nails or otherwise damage any standing live tree. No portable stands may be used within 50 yards of the boundary line on Barbour and Geneva State Forest AREAS."

So technically speaking, leaving a climber or lock-on isn't erecting a permanent stand, so to speak. At least in my mind. Pretty obvious about screw in steps or spikes.

Also what is interesting is that according to the "(aa)" portion, you could not construct a ground blind by cutting tree limbs or saplings down to do so.

The only public land I hunt is corps land, which specifies all stands must be removed daily. I would agree with what you're saying in accordance to the regulations you have listed.

Is it stealing to pull an "abandoned" climber or set of sticks and a lock on if you find them on public land? Or camera or anything not of a plant, rock, or animal veriety?

Going into Mulberry can be a pita since they keep most of the gates locked and the ones that aren't theres so many people that hunt there its dangerous. I'm seriously considering getting a bicycle. I never leave anything in there, people just don't have the respect for opp even when they can tell its only been there a few days. My gear is usually my pack, a doghouse blind, a small chair and shooting sticks. I love to Muzzle load in there and I don't get far from the main road. They will have a new Biologist there this year so I'll have to meet him and get his phone# so I can get some help getting deer or hogs out

I used to use a wheel barrow to bring deer out of hard to get into places. I guess you could take stuff in with one.
