I extracted the honey from my hive at my house. I only got 13 pounds of honey out of a medium super. I made a split a couple of weeks ago and stuck a full super on medium honey on the hive with full intentions of getting it off a few days later. Dang girls ate three frames of honey before I got back to it. I was going to extract it last weekend but the storms held me up. No big loss though because the honey had a very strong shrub taste to it. There are a couple of flowering bushes right beside the hive and they obviously filled up from those trees. As soon as I tasted the honey I was immediately reminded of the smell of the bushes. Planning on getting the main bulk from the farm next Saturday. Going to check on a couple of more hives I stuck honey supers on near the end of May trying to get some sourwood honey too. Stay tuned....

I'd like to see the whole process some time. With a suit on.

I'm way more modern now. I have a 2 frame STAINLESS STEEL bucket with a crank handle. I did get a little more uppity this year and bought a heated knife for uncapping the frames. smile

Definitely let me know how that sourwood turns out.

Some bees/queens will definitely eat it up and keep on brooding. The "feral" bees that I started with wouldn't do that. They would shut down brood rearing when the nectar flow stopped. I've been trying to breed them with bees that produce more honey, and keep that brood break trait. So far, so good. My best queen now makes a tremendous amount of honey and still takes a brood break. I was able to raise 12 daughters from her this year.

Brad,

The sourwood was empty. I have a friend that has two hives for pollinators only. He said I could put supers on them. They didn't even start to draw any comb, much less have any honey. I was a little bit surprised since they each had a deep box just about full of honey when I added supers. Oh well....

I was fortunate enough to get about 80 pounds from the farm hives. Good honey too. Both of the Frost packages I added this spring had full mediums over full deeps. Left the deeps and took the mediums.

Glad to hear that about the Frost packages. I really like their bees, I just wish they weren't so dang swarmy.

I have read that Sourwood doesn't produce nectar below an altitude of 1500 feet or something to that effect. I didn't know if it was true or not.
