My mom has discovered a honeybee hive in an old catalpa worm tree in her back yard. Apparently, they are entering through a small hole in the tree. She wants them gone and wants someone to get them or poison them. I told her I hate to see them killed, especially since I'm hearing there are fewer and fewer honeybees.
Anyone have an idea about how the bees could be caught and saved? Or anyone interested in trying to catch and save them? She lives in Morris just north of Gardendale. I'd be happy to meet or talk with anyone that might want them or have an idea as what to do with them. Like I said, I really hate the idea of killing them.

No problem if you cut the tree down. If not you can trap them out. It takes longer and more work involved. It can take weeks the get them out. Only problem there is you can't get the queen. I can see if I can found someone in your area if you want.

You should have a local bee keeper around that will know how to se a trap to harvest the bees but please don't kill them
When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself The older I get the better I used to be

Shed's spot on. A trapout will get most of the bees but you'll still have the hive in the tree and the next swarm that's looking for a home will move in.
Best bet is to cut the tree if you want to save the bees.
Have the bees been bothering her or did she just happen to notice them?

Google the Jefferson County Beekeepers Association. Somebody should be able to help you out. It is a little late in the year to be starting a new hive.

The bees have stung my brother-in-law while he was working and have also stung her grass cutter. Thanks for the info.
