What's best to put between the waterproofing on the foundation and the crushed stone?

Drainage mat. Various types. Geomat, Enkadrain, etc... Some are dimpled membranes, some are panels and others are insulation mats with drainage planes. They go over the dampproofing/waterproofing applied layer between that and the backfill or stone.

Why do they need to drain? I thought that was what the stone was for. I was thinking I just had to protect the membrane from the rocks.

I have used 4x8 blue foam board and it works well.
