Which one is the best to build off of? Do most people just build a short action on a long action receiver if that's what they have? I'd like to have a 6.5 creedmore and the YouTube videos make it look pretty simple. I worked as a small arms repairman for over a year building guns so I'm confident I can rebarrel a savage.

Any of the Short Actions like a Model 10 is what I would use for a 6.5 Creedmore. There are not near as many stock options for a long action.

If you are doing it yourself just skip the action work. You can't really do anything more than time it anyway.

10-4 it's kinda hard to find a short action at a good price. Do most people just buy a brand new rifle and go from there?

I have a couple Savage actions that I use for just plain ole shooting because the guns are basically just a switch barrel. You can't do that as easily with anything else on the market. I bought at Gun Shows and Pawn Shops I don't think I've got more than $225 in any of the three I used for the action. They were all beat but the receiver looked like it would clean up.

Just to kinda expand on why Savage rifles are accurate they have a floating bolt head. It floats at the cross pin and there can be a significant amount of bolt deflection at the rear and does not matter... the 2 locking lugs make full contact on BOTH lugs. It will swivel at the cross pin. The threads and lug abutments are made in the same fixture so they are square. The only other thing is them being square to the face and they do a pretty good job with that IMO.

You'll not see much gain in having expensive action work done in my experience. Skip it and buy a better barrel. I have been having good luck with Kreiger and Shilen lately. Citerion which is a Kreiger is (I think) joshm28's go-to and you can see his groups in the other thread for reference. Pretty good shooting there.

Look at my a little range time thread. That rifle was built on a Stevens 200 LONG ACTION. I bought the donor rifle for $250. I added a $350 Criterion Barrel, $100 Trigger, $150 Boyd's Stock and $1200 glass. I also sent the stock off to have custom bottom metal installed fir another $200 though it would not be required. In reality you can build the same rifle for $750. The Stevens 200 triggers can be adjusted down to 3lbs. Start perusing pawn shops!

Yes Criterion is my go to. I'm running several and each one is better than 0.5 MOA. My 6.5/284 is a legit .20 MOA.

That thread got me reading up on all this! So a Stevens 200 or any savage action besides axis or edge? Would I come out to the good paying a lil more for an accutrigger?

That's a personal decision. I'm not big on those triggers

I've only owned one savage with the accutrigger and didn't keep it long to remember if I liked it or not. What brand Barrel wrench do you recommend?

I am not a fan of the accutrigger either but don't let that deter you from trying it if you find a good deal on the gun.

I have a Bridgeport mill and my wrench and all that is homemade. I use the vise on the machine to change the barrels, etc.

What I would do is pick up the rifle then call Northland Shooters Supply and just get whatever they say you need including the barrel. They offer several wrenches for reasonable and they have the cut you can put a breaker on it. You'll need a strong vice and place to work as well. You'll have some money in the wrench, vise and headspace gauges, but having a switch barrel rifle if that is your goal is a thing of beauty.

I found 2 savage 110s in a pawn shop for $250 each. One 25/06 and the other 7mm. Can the bolt face be changed?

25-06 and 7-08 bolt face is the same and will work on most non magnum calibers. No change required for creedmoor
