My photobucket's not working. Can someone post a picture of a crazy looking yellow, orange, black and white moth. It was flying and landing around the base of my plants today, and I have no idea what it is. But im sure its a bad bug to have in the garden. After its identified, what are my options for killing it and its offspring?

Sounds like a tomato hornworm moth. BT or spinosad will work.

After some research I found that it is a squash vine borer moth. I've already applied D. earth to the leaves and base of plant. and will buy some BT also. what else can be done. I am sure that this is what killed my squash and zucchini last year also.

So ive announced war. Caught a squash vine moth in the act, managed to catch him in a tupperware. Then I beat it to death, drown it in soapy water and flushed it down the drain. I also took a knife and scraped off more than half a dozen eggs at the base of the plant. Heard they are attracted to yellow, so i put a yellow funnel filled halfway with soapy waterin the garden to kill some more. And I stabbed a squash/stink bug while I was out there. Ill keep checking for moths and eggs.

Let me know how that works out for you.
I had to just stop planting squash because of those evil bastages.

Alabama bugs. I planted a row of cabbages one year early spring. Just about the time they were going to be ready to pick, I noticed one morning these beautiful white butterflies all around my cabbages. I was so excited to see that they were attracted to my cabbages, just as I was......such a dumb butt back then!
You can just image what happened. Learned my lesson fast. 7 dust is the only thing I have found that will protect plants from these critters.
I am thinking about trying a trick my friend told me about. Slice a bar of soap that has a strong perfume odor like Irish Spring. Put it in a spray bottle with water. Let it dissolve to make a mixture of soap and water. You can add more water if all of the soap doesn't dissolve. My gardener friend says to spray this on your plants and it will not hurt the plant, but it keeps the bugs off. Not sure this will work...but I'm thinking about trying it on one plant just to test it out.

Ninjas often dressed as gardeners. wink

There are some who recommend cutting Irish Spring soap into cubes and burying [not deep just enough to keep it situated] beside plants to deter bugs. I have never tried it but some folks swear by it.
