We have a martin house that we swear is the teenage hang out for young martins!! They always nest across the road but we get these youngsters hanging out at our martin house!!! LOL!
Be kind to one another and tell the ones you love that you love them often. We never know what tomorrow will bring.

Put up some gourds and you'll get nesting pairs, as long as there are no trees around. I've got fewer Martins this year than I've had in years past. I've had over 100 pairs for a decade or so. Some of my gourds are turned sideways. I suspect an owl has been raiding them. Gonna have to run him off.

What kind of gourds do you have birdcarver? I have some Supergourds, some heavily modified Naturelines and the majority are Troyer Vertical gourds. I have tunnels on all my gourds.
Maggie, I was given a free used Trio Castle Martin house about 10-12 years ago. That's about a $550 24 room aluminum Martin house. All I had to do was take it down and take it with me, so I did. I installed that house directly in the middle of my gourd racks. In the two years I left it up, it was never nested in. Both years, all of my gourds were nested in, but none used the Trio.

Ordered them off best nest is all I can tell you, I was taught never make martins nest in a small gourd, when it gets hot they hang out and sometimes fall to the ground for a loss most of the time, at my old home I had up 50 homegrown gourds and when I would find one on the ground I would just shove him in a gourd with some others and parents would adopt then, have messed with martins for over 20 years they like people and fun to watch . After 2 years just got my first pair to build in my gourds here in a subdivision.

I've got too many trees too close. I love martins though - maybe I can get some eventually. The bluebirds pair that nested in the gourds won't even let the martins look in right now.
