Weber makes similar baskets to these and that is what I have.
I've never used them for searing or having a hot spot but they are great for smoking.
Put one on each side of the grill and you will have the entire center to smoke on.
Just never thought to use them to sear with but I may use them now so I do not use as much charcoal on a small cook.
Not that a Weber really uses that much anyway.

Edit
After looking into them more, I like the water reservoir but not enough to pay what they want for one.
Just get an aluminum tray for water.
The Weber baskets come in a set of 2 for maybe $20

I have these and use them a fair bit. Can put a pretty large drip pan between them. I'm usually cooking more than I could direct sear over one side of coals, but snakebit is right, you could do just that and save on coals.

Another similar product I hadn't seen before. Seems to perform the same function.

Snakebit & Ticka, thx for the replies; 'bout how many briquettes will one of these Weber baskets hold?

1:50 will give you an idea on how big they are.

I say about 20
