Me and my dad are building some trough style deer feeders for my farm. Does anyone know what the maximum height of the trough should be and still allow fawns to feed in it?

Thanks in advance!

if yer talking about first winter fawns then prolly no more than 20" to top of trough with 5" sides.

you can't have a trough that allows fawns to feed and excludes hogs. No such thing.

I just measured mine five minutes ago. Ground slopes a little, short end is 17" to top of sides(2X6), higher end is 22'. Fawns can reach the short end.

I also use a fawn feeder much like a calf creep feeder that excludes grown deer from the feed. I see fawns walk inside it and feed.

Google Auburn Deer Feeder. Should show you a set of plans for a covered trough feeder.

the Auburn one will do, most of the others are way too high for a fawn to feed in them.

You can make it the same height as you do for adults. We have MANY pics of the fawns and yearlings that have just jumped up in the trough to eat.

Not to derail, but I've never thought troughs were a good idea. Besides coons, disease propogation scares me. Just use a spinner feeder.

you cannot feed protein pellets from a spin feeder
