Rolltide.com reporting that we've hired Brad Bohannon, an assistant at Auburn and previously a Kentucky assistant.

I don't follow college baseball enough to know if that's considered a "good hire" or not, but he has been named NCAA Assistant Coach of the Year previously, so maybe he'll be decent.

Can't be any worse, anyway.

Yep, there's the WTF hire I was waiting on. He may turn out to be great but if you want to win, settle for nothing but the best. They've done it in football and $$$ shouldn't be a problem. Time will tell.

I was just talking to a guy I know a few minutes ago who is WAY into Alabama Baseball...probably moreso than anyone I've ever met, and follows college baseball in general religiously. Bohannon is who he's been wanting since before they even fired Goff. He claims it's a "home run hire"....that makes me feel a lot better about it

Maybe so, we will see. But he has never been a head coach. Mike DuBose was a helluva an assistant coach also.

Not entirely true.....spent 1 summer several years ago managing a team in a Summer League up north....I know I know, it's a stretch.

at any rate, supposedly he's a great recruiter. so we'll see how it goes.

Yea, and can't compare UA football hires to baseball hires. Football can compete for any coach. Baseball can't. But they should be able to compete for a consistent winner such as Virginia's coach. But I will be pulling for this guy and his teams. Hope he does well.

I don't think any assistant who has never been a head coach can fall into the "home run" category. That is not to say he doesn't have a good pedigree and is a promising hire that may turn them around, but a home run hire, in most people's minds is a sure thing that has done it before and is likely to replicate the success he's had in the past.

So is he going to do a Kirby and stay with AU through the regionals? I'm kidding, no one expects him to. He's got to get to work at his new job.

College baseball is a diff animal altogether. The really successful coaches are locked in to the schools they're at. Salaries can't be blown up like football coaches since the revenue isn't there. Hopefully coach bohannon (whom I met at au's winter camp this year) will right the ship in Tuscaloosa.

He's been there 28 yrs but Bama should have thrown some money at Gary Gilmore, Coastal Carolina's head coach and tried to lure him away. With Bama's facilities, name recognition/prestige and his ability to get the best out of even moderately rated recruits, he might could have turned it into the next Bama dynasty. What he's accomplished at CCU with little in the way of budget is nothing short of amazing.

I love how Alabama, Auburn and other schools always say they have a championship commitment to athletics. But it only applies to football. If a non-revenue team needs a coach they get a good one. But not the best one.

Did AU and UA make a run at Calipari or Boeheim or any of the truly top-tier men's basketball coaches? I like Johnson and Pearl. But they're not top-tier, like in Saban tier.

Did they make a run at the top women's basketball coaches? Why couldn't one of them get Dawn Staley to come? She's one of the greatest players, and now coaches, ever. Or maybe Geno Auriemma? He's the Saban of women's coaches. But they got two coaches who are nice and win a few.

In baseball why didn't either of them go after some of the winningest men's coaches? From a Wiki list that includes Mike Martin at Florida State, Mark Marquess at Stanford, Jim Morris at Miami, all with 1,450 wins or more.

Maybe they tried on all those and were told "No." Maybe they didn't throw Saban money and commitment behind the requests. Maybe UA and AU and a bunch of other universities only pay lip service to "we want championship teams in every sport!" and only give a chit about football.

Probably some of all.

Whoever is at UA, good luck because he's going to have a fairly clean canvas to build the program. They certainly can't do much worse.

Next thing will be Alabama trying to hire Malzahn. Dang, just leave us alone.
