For the hard bottom in Alabama, long tail all the way. If we had mud here like they have in Louisiana then a surface drive would be the way to go. A surface drive has way more parts that can break. For all out reliability a long tail wins every time. For speed surface drives win.

For use in Alabama an outboard with a jack plate. I've seen Cajuns run the correct Outboard setup and run just as shallow as anything would run in Alabama. I have owned them all starting with a 80's Go Devil even had dual Gator Tails.
They are fine for heavy milfoil and lilies but you aren't going to ride through mud like you see on the videos in Louisiana around here.
Some of the boats on Reelfoot with us have an outboard AND a longtail setup on them.

Is this just for general Use or what are you trying to navigate the boat through, i.e. beaver ponds/creeks with a small boat, run down the main river a mile and then cross a 100 yard stump flat? Lake full of weeds like Guntersville?

Grass. That's the toughest call. Something like a Gator Tail or Pro Drive would certainly fit the bill, however they suck riding long distances through open water and I don't think they are in their element on a remote steer setup. You need tiller on a mud motor.
I am not familiar with the Mobile Delta's backwaters so I don't know if the grass is matted all the way to the surface or a lot is underwater and how thick.
If it is real thick and matted on the surface only thing that will go through that is a mud motor or an airboat. Even with a tunnel you'll channel that grass up into prop if it is all on the surface. If it is 3-6 inches underwater.... now you can get into jack plate and outboard discussion. Combo Jack Plate and Breakaway plate. Your going to slow way down and put put through the shallows but you'll do pretty well even with a lot of trash in the water as long as you don't go fast hit a stump and mess up the foot on the motor. If you had a tunnel hull You can also build a knife into the tunnel to cut through lilies and keep trash from getting channeled into the prop.
What it really boils down to is how much of the ride is actually going to be in the grass. 3 miles across the bay, up a short canal and then a couple hundred yards across a grass flat... if we left the ramp at the same time I can get there and push pole the majority that kinda distance before you could get there with a mud motor.
Longtails suck in open water. Slow. Heavy. Hard to steer and will generally wear you out. They pop out of the water in waves and you just have to generally wrestle with them. So I would rule that out unless you are putting in the boat close to where you are going. They do work better on a hard bottom than a surface drive though.

I had a long tail mudbuddy when I duck hunted. It wasnt the easiest thing to handle but it wasn't horrible once you learn to handle them. That joker never once got stuck. The backwaters here can get rough-tons of grass, huge stumps, thick mud, super shallow water. I was rough on it and it never missed a lick. Hyperdrives would outrun me, but I've yet to see anyone around here do with a hyperdrive what I did with my long-tail... With all of that said, if I ever buy another duck boat it will have a Surface drive/hyper drive type motor, I would want the speed.
The fool tells me his reasons; the wise man persuades me with my own.

I've had a mud motor since about the mid 1980's. I had a Go-Devil with dual longtails at one time. You couldn't stick that thing. Just sucked to drive it. After I had dual Pro Drive Double LL tiller steer then Dual Gator Tails remote steer.
You really can't beat something like that 23 Surface Drive on a smaller boat for just getting where you want to go. The bigger boats just get stuck a LOT worse.
