Scott or others...can you guys please clarify what is legal for a newly licensed 16 year old as far as passengers go? I am seeing conflicting information on the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency website vs. the Alabama Public Health website.

Alabama Graduated Drivers License Law
Alabama has a Graduated Drivers License (GDL) Law which includes three stages: Learner's Permit, Restricted License, and Unrestricted License. An Alabama driver with a Restricted License (16-year-old drivers, as well as 17-year-old drivers licensed less than six months) may not:

1.

Have more than one non-family passenger other than the parent, guardian, or supervising licensed driver at least 21 years of age.

2.

Operate a vehicle between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., unless:

accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
accompanied by a licensed adult 21 years of age or older with parental consent.
going to or from their regular place of work.
going to or from a school-sponsored event.
going to or from a religious-sponsored event.
driving due to a medical, fire, or law enforcement emergency.
driving to or from hunting/fishing activities in possession of required licenses.
3.

Drive while operating any non-essential handheld communication device.


P.S. don't listen to your kid if he says two non-family members are allowed after six months of driving. At Grissom, someone made an official looking document to that effect.

Not to derail, but can you be pulled over for these violations or does another violation have to occur first? Example, can law enforcement pull over a car full of teenagers to check age and restrictions or do they have to have another moving violation to be pulled over?

People wonder why kids act like babies, because we treat them like babies. Just more BS rules to keep teenagers under wraps until they leave the house and go nuts because of their new found freedom. I also think the drinking age should be 18.

Yup, I bet my boys have been breaking the law since the oldest turned 16...there's a boat behind the truck 50% of the time and there's usually 3 or 4 of em going fishing or hunting. Wouldn't surprise me if there was a law about 16yo's not pulling a trailer.

Probably. I can think of a lot worse things than fishing a 16 year old could be doing.

The contents of the cooler are the determining factor in this.

"So far" all I've found is gatoraide, mtn dew and a monster drink...but they may be making sure the evidence is taken care of.

I have never heard of anyone being charged with a violation of the graduated driver's license law.

It is absolutely not a valid reason to stop a car to determine the age of the driver.

I knew about it. Driving is a privilege not a right. I don't like a lot of the laws but it is what it is.

I bet so,e 16 y.o.s could pull a Trailer better than an adult. It's not difficult. Backing isn't bad either. But I do believe the license restrictions are very rarely followed. I know I didn't follow them.

My 2 are aces at backing boat trailers! And the youngest dont turn 16 till monday.

Doekiller would love the first officer I ever rode with as a police officer back in 1986. His name was Leslie Moore and he was an older black officer. Among the first few black officers in Selma. He was loved by the white community because he treated them all with respect and did what he could to solve their problems. The black community hated him because he absolutely didn't cut them any slack. We would be riding down the street and we would meet a car driven by a young black guy and Cpl Moore would get excited and exclaim "You see the way he didn't look at me? He aint got no license. I can tell when they won't look at me like that." he'd stop them and dang if he wasn't right most of the time. He worked until he died. He had two things I wanted, he had a pristine 65 Mustang and a pair of mother of pearl handle revolvers that one of which he wore as his duty weapon, but I never had the courage to stop by his widow's house and ask about them. They were childless and he had no heirs. I've got a lot more Leslie Moore stories for another time.

I love officers like that. It keeps me in business. Just because it isn't legal doesn't mean I don't support them in their efforts. Hell, I told one of the black mountain Brook officers I had seen him with someone pulled over with his car being searched the night before and ask him what the guy did. His response was, "Driving while black after dark in Mountain Brook".
