The license to buy it is not hard to get at all. I don't know what you might need to license wise to spray it.

Commercial turf applicators license ? Used to be a test and then continuing education hours to keep it up to date.
"Cull" is just another four letter word...

I've thought about this myself. You specifically said herbicide but all the reading I've done, including the link above seems to suggest that it's mostly for pesticide spraying. Is anyone even sure it's required if all you spray is uncontrolled herbicides like Roundup and 2,4D?

Anytime you receive compensation for spraying a pesticide which the word pesticide means herbicide, insecticide, fungicide etc you have to have a commercial applicator license. If you apply a restricted one on your own land you simply have to have a private applicator license. The word pesticide is a generic term not specific.

The pesticide thing was throwing me off.

You will need a Custom Pesticide Applicators license. The link has already been posted above. You can buy the study material and I believe they will mail it to you. Once you pass the test, you have to take some continuing education credits and renew once every three years. I didn't think the test was that easy and I was pretty familiar with herbicides before studying the books. There's a lot of information about calibrating sprayers, labels, and other details that you will need to study before taking the test. The private applicators license will only allow you to spray restricted herbicides or pesticides on your own property, not for a commercial business for profit. My license is for Forestry Ground Equipment only. You have to apply for a license specific for what you are wanting to do. Is the test the same no matter which application you will be using. All I'm interested in is spraying woods that I've cleaned up and not lawns.

It will not ask questions specific to lawn or forestry. More like how to calibrate a backpack sprayer or questions about PPE and other safety issues that would cover any type of herbicide application. Just study the information packet they will send to you, it's all in there.
