Anyone know the best way to get out of jury duty? I really cant afford to take a week off work. Plus my side business will lose customers if i tell people to wait a week for me to show up after ive already scheduled them.

I'd hate to think I was on trial for a crime I didn't commit and all the hard-working folks shirked their civic duty and "got out" of their jury duty.

Can you just not schedule appointments for the days you have jury duty? But i did get out of jury duty when I was 18 because I had a work out with the Brewers during that time period.

I honestly forgot about mine about six months ago. I showed up to a packed courtroom about 10 minutes late and apologized. The baliff at the door said, "No problem. We have plenty. You're excused".

Was kind of wanting to witness the judicial process and get a few days off of work.

I don't blame you, but I don't think you'll lose any customers. And if one week will break you, well, that ain't good.

Governor Riley signed a law into effect that requires employers to pay for time missed to serve for jury duty. It is supposed to pay the difference in what you're paid to serve and what you would be paid for a normal 40 hours work week. You won't get paid for missed overtime, and you're screwed if you're self-employed or have side jobs. I'm 99% sure of this, because we had to start paying folks here. Maybe Doekiller or someone will chime in that can verify.

Yep, it'd be a damn shame if you were on trial one day and the only jurors that could be found were ones that didn't have jobs. I'd rather have a jury of my peers, not the dregs of society.

I didn't mean financially. I'm salary and will get same pay check. Work will just fall apart.

Heaven forbid you get on some multi month OJ Simpson type trial

Tell them that and ask to be excused. Maybe set a time to serve during an off time. I've done both and enjoyed my times serving. Very informative.

This. Last one I was excused, but had to wait to see if they called me to sit on a grand jury. They didn't, but one of the names they called was of a gentleman that had to be 80 with dementia...scared me to think he would be sitting on a grand jury.

Good luck with that. Federal jury duty you will have to show up. They rarely give excuses. Now, many times with federal jury duty you will get a call the week before telling you that all the cases settled and you are not needed. Very few cases get tried in federal court these days.

No way for a multi month case to happen in this case. The reason about happens in California is because they don't start court until 10:30 every day and take a 2 hour lunch and then start back at 2 and stop at 4. They also on;y have trial 4 days a week.

It isn't as easy to get out of jury duty in most jurisdictions anymore. I have a jury out right now in a case. There were 5 doctors on my panel and not one of them got out of jury service until they were cut when we struck our jury. I had executives with Alagasco, Alabama Power and the CEO of Grandview Hospital on the panel we choose from. None of those people wanted to be there. But, not a one of them was excused. Now, only one of them made my jury. Most of the time, if you are struck form a jury panel on Monday, you are excused for the rest of the week.

Yeah, check that...I wasn't excused...I was struck from the panel (and excused).

Last time I was selected the judge asked everyone if it would create a hardship for anybody if selected. One idiot said he had better things to do than sit in a courtroom. The judge didn't like that answer buy let him off anyway

In a court room it is a helluva lot easier sitting on the jury than sitting beside a defense attorney.

Fine upstanding citizen right there. I wouldn't want someone like this on my jury who wouldn't pay attention, care or give a chit about which way he voted.

Getting struck is easily accomplished.

I usually just let it be known up front I don't like Ambulance Chaser Attorneys. Which is essentially all the plaintiff's attorneys in the room.

That works.

If they are suing Drano... I'll move on to something like my dog drank a bottle of drano when I was 5 years old and died.

I hate Drano.

That kinda thing.

Been up there many times never been put on a jury. My civic duty is paying for about 10 families to not work. Lest they could do is show up for Jury duty. How am I supposed to keep their EBT cards coming if I've got to do that for them as well?

No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

I was excused from 2 months of grand jury duty in our county due to work and thrown into a month of "normal" jury duty pool. One more call in and its done thankfully.

I would love to serve BUT, being 100% commission paid, if I'm not working I'm not getting paid. Period. There is no "making up a difference" with my pay.

Depends on if you live in some small county or a large county. In jefferson county, the judges are goi g to say tough shucks. In chiton county they will probably let you go.

I've been called to be on jury duty a few times.Everytime I made a phone call and was off the hook.Im self employed with work to do,bills to pay and mouths to feed...Me sitting in on a week long trial as a juror could be the difference in whether my lights stay on or not according to how work is going.

Been up there many times never been put on a jury. My civic duty is paying for about 10 families to not work. Lest they could do is show up for Jury duty. How am I supposed to keep their EBT cards coming if I've got to do that for them as well?

Assholes like you shouldn't be in a jury anyway.

Depends on if you live in some small county or a large county. In jefferson county, the judges are goi g to say tough shucks. In chiton county they will probably let you go.

It's not as easy as you think unless you know folks at the courthouse....or if you tell them you are racist against whites, blacks and Mexicans and they are all guilty..That usually works

I've been called 5 or 6 times that I can remember in mobile. Always been self employed. When I was younger and money was tight I skipped it once and they just rescheduled it. I was let out of it after talking to the judge twice. Sat on a single day jury once, and sat there for 3 days another time without getting picked for a case. The last time they let me go after half a day because they already had enough people. That's been about 4 or 5 years ago.

Trox, I agree. It is getting a lot tougher to get off jury duty everywhere.

I know I am in a minority, but everyone should serve on a jury. It would open a lot of eyes and change a lot of opinions.

I'm sure it would.Im not against being a juror it's just the few times I've been called for jury duty it was just bad timing for me.If I get called and we ain't working I'll gladly serve..Actually the last time I called and got taken off then they sent a letter saying they had already settled and my services weren't needed.

I agree. For the first time in my life I was called and selected to serve on a circuit court case a few months back. Showed up on the day of the trial and we were sent to wait in the juror's room. A little while later the clerk came in and told us the case had been dismissed, but the judge wanted to talk to us.

The judge thanked us for our willingness to serve, and for our time, asuring us that they had done everything they could to not waste it. The D.A. explained the case to us, and what had gone on that morning. The defense even spoke a few minutes.

I found the whole thing pretty fascinating and learned a lot about what goes on in my community. I definately had a lot more respect for LEO and the crap they have to go through each and every day.

I would gladly serve again.

My opinion, if it matters, is this; if you are self employed like Trox, being excused is understandable, but if you are able to serve and just don't want to because it is an inconvenience, then you have no right to cry when a career criminal robs you and sticks a gun in your face, nor do you have the right to cry when you, or your spouse, child, or loved one is arrested and tried and convicted for a crime they didn't commit. Reasonable jurors who take their duty seriously could possibly have prevented both of those scenarios.

Just like voting. If you don't vote, you lose all empathy in bitching about who is in office. If you are not willing to sit on a jury, then you have no business complaining about the outcome of a trial.

Go to the Voir Dire and explain your situation to the judge. If he thinks it outweighs the need for good jurors, then he'll let you go.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I got picked for a jury last week, all week long. I don't wish that boring mess on anyone, but it did feel good to have 1/12th a vote to keep some scum from getting a lot of money they didn't deserve.

I went one time and if you didn't think you could serve had to stand in line and tell the judge. Explained it was our busy time of the year, so he asked if I wanted to serve the first or second week. I picked the second and was not needed. He made a statement that many people want the second amendment right but aren't willing to serve on jury duty.

Yeah. It's very difficult to be consistent. I'm frequently guilty of picking and choosing myself.

I served recently and thoroughly enjoyed going through the process. Was it an inconvenience, sure. Our legal system, whether we agree with all outcomes/trials/judges or not, is the best in the world. There are many men that have died protecting the right to a fair trial. If I am inconvenienced for one or two weeks to do my duty then so be it. Trying to find excuses to get out of it is lazy - if it truly causes you and your family a hardship then most judges will dismiss you - but they are very good at deciphering the BS.

I've been called 3 times. I always bring a ton of work to do. I sit around on Monday and watch jury pools get called and then around lunch time I'm told I've been excused for the week.

That's happened all three times.

Them adding wifi to the jury pool room was sort of a game changer for those that need to get chit done and can't sit around.

I got summoned a couple of months back. I had planned on showing up to serve as my civic duty. I though it would be an interesting process to see first hand. I recieved a letter a few days or week before my date that pretty mich said " Thanks, but you are no longer needed"

In Lubbock County, somehow I was picked every six or seven months it seems. One of the defense questions was always "Is anyone here related to a Lubbock police officer?". Yep, my brother is Sr Corp Mark Long. I was always struck by the defense. Free paid day off work.

agree.

We have a lot of folks here with tremendous common sense and decency that would make great jurors. (some not so much as can be seen from this thread).

Most folks may serve only one time in their entire life.

So even the self employed folks should be glad and willing to do that since it will probably only be one week out of their entire life that they are called upon to do so.

Yep - signed a form for one of my employees. The company paid him for performing his civic duties.
