I've heard the DR is fun. A dollar goes real far there. I'm interested in getting a full report too.....we had a blast in Mexico last summer, but I'm not sure I'm ready to go back quite yet, just due to the political tensions with Mexico. DR might be a great alternative.

Congrats.
DR is amazing. Its been 15 years but most of the resorts were "national," in that they were associated with a particular european country. Most were all inclusive and by my impression pretty safe.
Once you get out of the resorts the rest of the island is beautiful (think rainforest meets beach) but struck by all the things you have with abject poverty. Something the wife and I could handle but wouldn't want to have the kids around that. Hoards of screaming children begging for food, starvation, abused animals, people in mud huts, etc.
