My dad recently talked to someone from Alabama game and fish and was told that, starting next season, opening day at Oakmulgee and 5 other WMAs would be March 24th. Said it's a done deal. Anyone else heard?

They are not going to make any changes without the data. Yea right. All the private land hunters will not be so unconcerned when it happens statewide.

What did your Dad's contact say about the 5 bird limit?

Still the same in preliminary draft. Maybe we got another year of the Charles Kelley legacy.

We have been told consistently the idea of pushing the season opening day back is clearly a possibility at some point. That conversation was a few pages long on here - and had some drama. Don't want to get back into that.

And I still believe a sizable zone of South AL needs a March 1st or 5th start date. Pushing the season start date back here would be absolutely terrible.

My contact was Keith Gauldin the Chief of the wildlife section. No indication that anything is up with the limit at this time although he did tell me that personally he thought our season was too long and our limit too liberal. I even called him on the phone when I got home and asked him to reconsider and he said that I was more concerned with my opening week turkey camp at Oakmulgee than I was the resource.

Simply ask him to explain how, biologically, a shorter season or a lower limit will increase nest success, poult survival or poult recruitment into the fall population. All the bios at the GFC will agree that we are having an issue with poults being brought into the population not adult hen or gobbler survival nor with hunters disturbing nests. It is a weather/predator issue and shorter seasons and lower limits will NOT address that.

Gobbler I agree with you 110% but you know better than to bring common sense into an argument with the DCNR!

Hey gobbler - great to see you still hanging around with your posts that aren't fake science. Don't be a stranger here - 2dogs is gonna get Chucky fired and your name is the only one I keep hearing mentioned to replace him. If you will take the job, I'll give up my campaign to get the dcnr abolished. smile

That last statement is an insult to your character.

I could be swayed either way concerning the limit, but the opener DOES NOT need to be later in ANY part of Bama
