Well i killed a 26# bird in northern Iowa this afternoon, but the girlfriend killed the one that was with him that weighed 30#s. smile Just crazy how fat and healthy these birds are up here. Both would have had 1 1/4" spurs but one of hers was busted off. Thats 2 birds in this trip she's killed with busted spurs.

Congrats! Crazy about the spurs.

One of Amanda's from Oklahoma had a broken spur also. I just attributed it to the 9 Jakes he was fighting on the way to us and their natural aggressiveness. Those suckers would flat out run to a full strut decoy and try to destroy it.

Congrats on the big birds! Do you still have to apply for a tag to hunt Iowa?

Yes sir Mr. Steve you sure do. It's not a big deal but not as easy as OTC tags.

And here's the 2 of them side by side.

May just be an optical illusion, but even on the ground, hers looks bigger (the one on the left).

Both of them had so much yellow fat it was unreal. I've never seen anything like it. They also both had craws slap full of corn. These farmers up here have just got corn in the ground in the last week or so, and it looks like these birds are working it over pretty good.

Yea it isnt bad. And its pretty much a sure thing in all units. But unit 4 is the highest demand(southern Iowa). We're in unit 6. Right in the far northeast tip of Iowa, right where Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin all meet.

laugh Every single year in the early parts of the Bama season, when I see ya'll with dead turkeys laying on flat roads with pines in the background, I always wonder if ya'll realize whatsoever how blessed you are at that given moment. grin

Congrats to ya'll on those hefty birds. They are so fat their breasts don't even look real!

Are you still in Iowa? I thought the limit there was just one? Or have you crossed into another state?

We were still staying in Iowa. But i gained access to some private ground in Minnesota. So once we killed in Iowa we started hunting there. We've been within 30 mins of the line this whole time.

Smart planning to hunt near state lines so you can quickly hunt another state once you tag out in the first. I've always wanted to hunt Iowa and those big birds, but didn't wanna deal with applying for a single tag. Other spots those planning a western hunt might consider is a TX-OK-KS hunt. That gives you 9 tags and you won't have to drive far to fill them if you can find the right places to hunt.

Good luck on all your spots!

Ive hunted Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and Nebraska multiple times each. I love those states. They are hard to get away from, but im trying to work towards a 49 state slam. So im having to broaden my horizons. Although i did hunt Oklahoma and Kansas again this year smile

Good luck on your slam; seems to be quite a few people pursuing that now.

I enjoy hunting the same places over and over. The place I hunt in KS is far from the best land out there, but it has turkeys and I can usually kill a couple. I know some of those tracts as well as places in AL.

Be happy to Hank! Im trying to pick up a couple new states each year. But its tough. Hard to leave the big 4 (Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas) We're going to Colorado and Montana next year. BUT, a few of my friends want to do Texas or Kansas again, so that will be another repeat. I may try to do a northeast trip mid May next year if everything aligns.

Dylan, how many states do you have now? I've about decided I'm going to try to do it also. I'm only at 9 now so I've got a ways to go.

Im not far ahead of you, only 14 here. But ya gotta start somewhere. It may take me 30 years to finish. Lol Its just hard to stop going to states that let you kill 3 or 4 birds and go to states that only let you kill 1. Plus none of my friends are really interested in the us slam, so it makes it hard for me to find people to go with me to states with one bird limits. And it sucks traveling alone.
