I'm in Tennessee and shot my first ever bearded hen. Around 9AM yesterday we saw her and three other hens across a field and decided to put the sneak on up a little rocky branch followed by a typical march up a massive grassy hill. Full on Indian mode, tiptoes and crouch walking. She was in half strut when I jumped up from behind some sage grass. The little tranny jumped in the air like a kite taking off in a 20mph gust of wind, and I folded her with the Longbeard #5s at 47 steps. Her beard was 7.5" which was pretty cool. Only weighed about 16lb. Anybody else seen the bearded jennys running around?

Will post pic later.

I see them a lot and they are fairly common.

I took a video of one jumping a hen decoy opening week of Bama season.

I've saw bearded hens in three states this year, and have seen at least one in Bama every year for the last several years. As for the one you killed in half strut, I've saw non-bearded hens do this before and naturally put a beat down n a decoy.

16 pound hen is completely possible with all the 23-26 pound gobblers taken this year!

If it makes you happy, congrats. I was on an out of state hunt where bearded hens were legal and called up one that had about an 8-9 inch beard. I passed because shooting a hen has been a cardinal sin for over 30 years. The game warden I hunted with said he would have killed it and mounted it. Again, to each his own. Congrats.
