Since the only thing we can do at the moment is get our summer food plots in and prepare for the season coming up, what do you think is the biggest lesson you have learned from hunting big woods bucks? I have hunted the mountains of Hi Jackson for years now and I have been curious what others do to try and get ahead of the game when it comes to finding and closing the deal on these old deer that have plenty of room to hide. I know I learned a huge lesson this past year on stand placement and also just how easy it is to let one slip up on you and be clueless that he is even in the area until it is too late. Do you prefer hunting edges of timber where two different types meet? Thickets that seem like the sunlight hasn't hit the ground in years? Or those wide open hollers that you can squeeze off a shot for several hundred yards? I got curious on other opinions because there seems to be more and more food plot only hunting related topics across the spectrum (not that there is anything wrong with that) than how different people approach big tracts of endless timber and get the job done.

My 2 favorite places to hunt are the edge of a giant briar patch and a swamp. Especially if the deer are pressured. Oh, I like acorn covered areas too. Preping food plots is cool but, there's good scouting to do now also. Learn new areas, rub lines and stuff like that. I can elk hunt in August and I've been checking out 1 to 3 new places monthly since the season ended in Sept.

use the search function and look up any post 2dogs has ever made on how to kill big bucks on Hi Jackson. That'll be your best bet on getting a doctorate in the killing of big bucks of Hi Jackson.

We are not perfect, only forgiven!!!

I never seem to have any luck in wide open mature hardwoods. Thick stuff always holds more where I've hunted.

Hunt pinch points and edges. Where two or more timber types meet is good and are often pinch points. I like a narrow strip of slightly open timber between to super thick areas. I will not hunt in wide open hardwoods you can shoot 100 yards or more. It would be a freak accident if a mature buck travels through there in daylight. For the life of me I don't understand why fellers in LA kill bucks in those huge wide open pines.

Never hunt in the bottom of a tight hollow. Days when the air is heavy the scent just hangs and wind always swirls. I just don't think deer like traveling in bottoms of tight hollows, harder to escape quickly I guess. Also water is usually running down in them and harder to hear. Hunt 1/2 up or higher, I like to be up on the ridge if it's a tight , deep hollow. I've never been much of a fan of hunting off in the sides or bottoms of hollows. I 'd be more likely to be on top of the ridge between two hollows, scent will rise easier. Bucks like places they can make two bounds and be deeper in the thicket or across the ridge and out of sight.

When hunting in these hardwood mountains ya gotta learn to play the thermals. Hunt pinch points, edges and structure. Structure being, knobs, hog back ridges, points saddles and narrows.

Easy Demp, you're laying it on a little thick. laugh

Agree 100%. Always had success catching bucks traveling just below the crest of a ridge in a cross wind. I think they like being able to see down and across a deep bottom and smell whatever is coming over the ridge top.
