If you were buying a new Phoenix 919, would you rather have a 225 Merc or Yamaha?? My general assessment is the Pro XS will be marginally faster, but the SHO will be marginally more longer lasting. The Mercury is roughly $1,500 less than the Yammy.
We were on the edge of Eternia, when the power of Greyskull began to take hold.
I'd probably go Pro XS. The old 2.5 mercs would run like a "raped ape" as my old mechanic used to say, but longevity certainly wasn't their strong suit. On the higher HP, Merc seems to have gotten it right with the XS. I'm not sure there is any difference in the longevity now between the Merc and the Yammy. I've got a 7 yr old XS on my boat and haven't had a lick of trouble out of it.
Too rich for my blood and I don't have either one but if I were spending the money it would be on the Yamaha
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.
What's the weight diff.? XS is a 2 and SHO is a 4. You'll save money on oil with the Yammy. I'd guess that fuel economy is about the same. My XS sips the fuel. I havent seen the new 225 SHO. Did they slim it down any from the older models? It used to be about the size of 3 beer kegs lashed together and weighed about the same as 8 full ones. If they've got the weight/size down, I might go that route. Yammy will probably give you a better warranty too. Wait around if you can, Yamaha will run a warranty extension special a couple or three times a year.
Get the sho. Guy I used to fish with went from a pro Xserve to a sho on his ranger. Said he wished he done that to start with. Claimed he got a little more top end also.
The Yamaha is a good brand too. I had a friend of mine that had one on a Polar Kraft that should have quit and been in a junkyard a long time ago. I believe it is still going now too.
