Well boys it was some tough hunting but we managed to tag out but they didn't come easy. We started strong but hit a wall for a couple of days and man I got frustrated. I killed 2 in the first 2 days and it went down hill quick. We were in the birds but couldn't get one to walk by in range for nothing.

I found some birds gobbling one morning so me and BC went after them that afternoon and figured out where they roosted. Went in the next morning and we were covered up in jakes. The gobblers went the opposite direction with the exception of one. This bird had a distinctive gobble that was a little long and kind of raspy compared to the others. He hung around so we decided to split up and slip around a knoll so no matter which side he came around we would have him covered. As soon as BC stepped out the bird was looking at him so he threw up and missed him. We watched him run up the hill and stop to look back and he walked off from there. We got rained out that afternoon so the next morning we go back and set up on the other side where the gobblers were and guess what the gobblers and jakes had switched places so we were set up next to all the jakes again. You guessed it the gobblers went the other way again. That afternoon we are walking back in there and spot 2 hens on a flat at the bottom of the hill. We watched them for a few minutes and decide that we are just going to have to walk on down and run them off because there's no way to get where we need to be without doing so. They see us and start making their way off and just as we go to start walking the bird with the raspy gobble sounds off right below us. I peek around the cedar tree and see him strutting below us. I told BC that I was going to move up one tree when he turned around and kill him. The bird decides to start walking up a deer trail to us and since him and BC had history together I decide to stand aside and let BC finish it. I get behind BC and I'm on the lookout and BC is at the ready with his shotgun. The bird pops up at 25yds and I tell BC to look to his left. He puts his gun on him and BANG the bird takes off with his Jake buddy. Of course I make fun of him as much as I can for missing such a "chip" shot. The next morning I go after a bird that I seen on the edge of a cornfield a few days before. BC kills his bird early so he drives by and gives me intel about the birds whereabouts. The gobbler literally walked right by me just out of sight. That is when I lost it. I was ready to call it a trip and just eat my last tag. BC gives me a pep talk and I decide to give him another try that afternoon. I get set up about 3:00 and about 4:15 I do a series of calls. At 4:30 I look up and the gobbler is walking down the fence line headed right to me. I get the gun up on my knee and I'm ready. This bird read the script and did just like he needed to. He walked up, cut the corner, stopped at 30yds in one of the openings I had to shoot
through and picked his head up looking away. It was perfect. I settle the sights on his wattles and BANG the bird jumps up in the air and lands just looking around. We are both in shock at this point. He turns to walk off so I put the sights on him again and BANG he stops looks around and takes off in high gear. WTH just happened. Needless to say if I wasn't ready to call it before that just sealed the deal. I was DONE with it. BC gives me another pep talk and tells me one of the best pieces of advice I've ever been told. He said "Just remember a gobbler has to win every time, you only have to win once". He tells me he will go with me the next morning to try and help me fill my last tag. We set up where we thought some birds might be but as daylight broke we glass aross the field and the roost trees are empty. Losing hope fast we are standing there discussing what to do and the bird with the raspy gobble sounds off. He's not real close but he's not far enough away to keep us from giving it a shot so we take off in his direction. We bail off into a creek bottom for cover and pop up on the edge of a little opening. The bird sounds off again and he is just to my left with a cedar tree between us. It wasn't but a few minutes later and he was at 25yds right down my gun barrel. I get down on the stock and BC whispers "cut him" I make sure I'm down on the stock, the sights are lined up, I'm squeezing the trigger and not jerking it and BANG the bird just folded. I jump up and run over to him and pick him up. When I turned around BC was standing there with a smile on his face bigger than mine. We bumped fist, shook hands and just stood there taking it all in on the last hunt of the season. He was my biggest bird of the trip. 22lbs 6oz, 1 3/16" spurs and a 10 5/8" beard. I owe that bird to BC because without him and his pep talks I would have been eating a tag. Thanks again brother keeping me positive and pushing me to stay after them until the last minute!

Congrats on a great trip! I've had my rear end whipped by 2 KS birds. I've been hunting them 3 days and they have gobbled at me a thousand times, but they won't come in. I need BC here to give me a pep talk; about to call it quits and head for home

Congrats on a great trip guy's. thumbup There is nothing like getting a good pep talk from your hunting buddy when you have had enough. It's always good to have those type buddies around on out of state hunts when the hunting is tuff and lack of sleep is the norm. It's very easy to walk away when you are frustrated and tired!! I'm glad you stuck it out and was rewarded with your commitment!
