south of hills, north of plain...
So I go to the camp last weekend to get a little hunting in. I ease down the power line to a hill I like to set up and hunt. The power line hasn't been maintained it seems like 3 years. I bush hogged me a little spot here earlier in the season to give them a place to do their thing. Anyway, as I'm walking down the line a come across two nesting hens about 1/3 mile apart from each other and also get back to our gate, which runs right under the power line and there is a third nesting hen. See's literally nesting 15 yards from the gate. Long story short I noticed the right of way contractors a few hills over and knew they'd be ruining these 3 nest, hoping the one by the gate would get spared since it was literally 3 yards from the edge of the black top. NOPE, drove by yesterday and it was cut clean. I don't know who to mention this to and if they even care but this seems to be terrible timing for maintainance.
Of the 3 nest one had 11, one had 12 and the one by the gate had 15 eggs. So 38 eggs in about a 3/4 mile power line. My math is fuzzy buts that's A LOT of negative impact over
many many miles of power line. Worse than nest raiders I'd imagine because if they lay under the line it's 100% chance of a ruined nest. Seems avoidable if we can get together and have a conversation about this. I'm not sure they are but I wish they did and I sure there are 100's of land owners who do as well.

Man..... that's tough. I wonder if you would have put some stakes in the ground with flagging ribbon if they would have avoided them. Probably not but it might be worth a try next year.

Yeah, I guess I may need to give that a try next time this happens. It can hurt. I wish I knew who to call that is in charge of the maintance. Heck, I'd keep it mowed if they would allow me to do it and for free. I'd do it in the middle of summer or Fall or just as deer season wraps up. Save them that 3/4 mile. Just wondering if anyone else has approached them about this or even a contact. It's south Perry county.

I understand your point but there's no way a utility line maintenance contractor can hold off on mowing during nesting season. Hopefully those hens will re-nest and still have a productive year. Cut out all of the times for ground nesting birds and deer fawning season and that's about half the year they couldn't work. It should be good nesting for the next two seasons before they come back again.

True and good points. I hope they do and should find good nesting and have a successful hatch.

They won't hold off mowing but if you flag it next time they will go around that spot if you let them know about it. Not sure if the hen will come back or not with that much going on around the nest or if it would even do any good since that little brushy patch would stick out like a sore thumb to predators roaming by.

In general (in Alabama), most utilities maintain/trim their rights-of-way on a 4 year cycle. They follow that up the next growing season with a herbicide application...Of course, all of this depends on a steady, solid budget, which is always subject to change at any moment

I know some folks who have worked with local utilities and do just that... they maintain and plant foodplots, etc. You should contact whoever is in charge if you're willing to keep it up, likely to pay off for you.

It's worth a shot. I sure wouldn't accept it as fact without trying to do something. If you bushhogged it every February, they might be able to skip your section of powerline entirely and still get paid for it. It's a win-win.

I'm willing to bet, if you keep it mowed and/or planted, they won't mess with it.

If it bothered me that badly I would just mow it when you felt like I doubt you would hear any complaints.

Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

If you keep it mowed they will skip over it. If it's an alabama power line they have a program called Alabama Wild Power that you can apply for and get $50/acre up to 10 acres to plant food plots in the pwowerline.
If they didn't crush the eggs there's a good chance the hen will come back and finish the job nesting.
I mowed over a nest last year that I didn't see prepping a food plot for planting. The hen returned to the nest soon after and hatched out the entire clutch of eggs.
I stayed away from the nest area after that and disced around the nest area. When I would get close to her spot on the tractor she would leave the nest.
When I got through discing I would pull about 100 yds from the nest and turn the tractor off and wait. Within 5 minutes she would ease back to nest and set on the eggs.
I kept a check on it and she hung in there and finished the job. It amazed me about her dedication
