It's absolutely amazing how a lot of otherwise-sane/friendly people can get behind the wheel of a vehicle and become a totally different person. Impatient, mean, agreessive, spiteful, vengeful.....I'd love to see a psychology thesis written on the subject.
My theory is that people feel as if they have some sort of anonymity when they're in their vehicle, that they don't have when they're, say, in a store or something. Kinda similar to internet trolls that get online and become a totally different person. They'll act in ways they never would face-to-face.

lots of idiots out there driving and you never know how they will react to anything you do.
I had a guy almost hit me on I20/59 one day near Woodstock. He was acting a fool already, tailgating another car. He changed lanes real fast, came across the line and nearly slammed into me. I laid in the horn and the asshat swung in behind me and rode my bumper. I just slowed down, then some more. Asshat passed me, pulled over in front and slammed the brakes. I expected it and still damn near hit him.
I got in front of him by going around an 18 wheeler. He followed me tailgating all the way to Tuscaloosa. He would pull up beside me and scream and pitch a tantrum. I'd make a finger gun and shoot him. He would go absolutely ballistic then so I quit. I got off at the bypass exit just south of Tuscaloosa. I wasn't taking asshat to my house, so I stopped on the exit ramp and got out with a shotgun. He stopped 70 yards away, so I waved him to me. He backed up and got back on the Interstate.
Really, really, really, crazy folks out there. Take no chances with em.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

i saw an article a few weeks ago that showed left lane slow pokes causing more wrecks than speeders. It was a pretty wide margin too.
If it happened as you described, then yes the guy was a hot head. I flashed my lights at a woman going 70 in the left lane last Thursday. We had 20-30 cars piled up behind her after she matched the speed of the semi next to her for 5 miles or so. She got pissed off and slowed down. When she did that I had room to pass in the right lane. When I went to do that, she sped up to 90 trying to block me.
I think people zone out in the left lane and the next thing they know, someone is on their azz and it pisses them off. I can't stand those people who purposely speed up just to keep you from overtaking them. Yes, the slow folks in the passing lane can definitely get a lot people antsy and really irrational quick. That's the scariest thing, to have 6 or 8 cars with mad drivers jockeying for that little gap to try and get around the slow poke.

I drive...a lot for work, long distances. If I am in the left lane waiting on a slow poke and the guy comes to the right and tries to pass, I close the gap and do not allow it.
I am also the guy that lets tractor trailers come out to pass when they signal. I know they appreciate it too.
When on the interstate and a lane closes, I go ahead and move to the free lane and wait my turn. I actually think its good when the big trucks take the closing lane to keep everyone from bottlenecking at the merge point.
