I'll be done with trade school at the end of June. Pretty set on traveling for a little while. I've also thought about the rigs offshore. I've got a engineering company I can get on with based out of Philadelphia. Who on here has personal experience traveling. I know it involves being gone from family. Not a big deal. I'm single. I want to make the most money I can so I can get settled in for a permanent job.

Look into a pipeline.. there welders make upwards of $50 an hour and ALL they do is weld. The helper stretches leads and everything else.

You better go get in a shop and really learn how to weld. Only thing those schools teach you is how to pass a weld test. Just because a person can pass a weld test doesn't mean they can weld. Best thing you can do is stay local in a fab shop for a few years before you even think about hitting the road

I'm doing some right now. It's not bad. Just don't really enjoy it as much as welding.

No doubt that pipeline welders make really good money but like Cole is saying you can't just walk in and start welding on a high pressure petroleum pipeline.

What about the shipyards in Mobile? I hear Austal commercials all the time looking for welders.

I know several owners of welding shops down here who do everything from ornamental to huge industrial jobs. If you are interested in coming down this way let me know.

I've thought about shipyards. But haven't looked seriously into them yet.

Austal and VT Halter are 2 of the biggest down here. There is also Patti shipbuilding in Pensacola.

Some of our biggest fab shops are:
Universal Fabricators
WD Rogers
Eacambia Welding
Rudd Welding
Pensacola Metal fab
Brownsville Welding

Also check out Muskogee Technologies in Atmore

I believe to weld at Austal now, you have to go through their welding school to ensure you can pass a Navy weld test.

ColeT, I would do Austal.

Listen to SBS Cole. He speaks from experience. He went from a fluffer to his present job with a little edumacation. I wonder if he fluffs on the side? rofl
Just protect your eyes. Plenty of guys have gotten rich with a 1 ton with a welding machine on the back working on pipelines and oil fields.
