The wife and I made a quick anniversary trip to Atl for a concert and a little kid free time this weekend.

Nice weekend and headed home this morning on I-20, just east of the state line, when things got crazy. I was driving in the left lane, with an SUV just to my rear, in the right lane, and another SUV up ahead in the right lane. Traffic was stacked up pretty heavy behind us and it was raining pretty good when I noticed the SUV ahead of us drifting to the right with his right side tire almost over the white line. I made a short comment to my wife about it, and the next thing I knew the SUV was sideways, at 75 mph, in front of us and headed into our lane. I couldn't get on the brakes too hard because of the wet road and the traffic behind us, but I somehow managed to get slowed down and off to the side of the interstate, without getting ran over, while the SUV slid backwards off of the road ahead of us, over the guardrail and down a 50-60ft embankment, while flipping end over end 5 or 6 times before landing on its roof in the edge the woods.

My wife grabbed the phone and dialed 911 and I bailed out and headed over the guardrail. I couldn't see the vehicle until I topped the hill but when I finally could I didn't think there was anyway anyone in it could be alive. I remember my mind telling me to stop, for fear of what I'd find, but I also knew that someone needed help. I can also remember, due to the fact that it was an SUV, thinking to myself "please God don't let there be any kids in this car."

By the time I got to them, the driver was climbing out. He said he was fine but he wasn't sure about his passenger. As bad as I didn't really want to, I climbed in to find another man, who had ended up in the back of the SUV, bleeding from his head and disoriented but, for the most part, he seemed ok. Others were at the vehicle by then and he was eventually helped out and seemed to be fine.

After a few minutes, my wife and some others had started helping gather things from the car that were scattered everywhere, and I noticed the driver seemed panicked and trying to comb through their luggage and bags. I wrote it off as maybe adrenaline or just general shock from the wreck and didn't think much of it. My wife later told me that when she picked up one of the bags she could easily smell marijuana.

After the EMT's and local deputies arrived, we moved away and let them do there job and I finally caught my breath. As I walked back up the hill, I was stopped by a local officer and asked a few questions and also if asked I could stay and answer questions for the trooper when he arrived.

As it turns out, I'd stood in the pouring rain for 30 minutes, and ended up with every piece of clothing I had on drenched, to help two guys who could've easily killed me, because they were smoking a joint, while driving 75 on the interstate in the pouring rain. Two guys who could've made my kids orphans, while transporting their duffle bags full of pills and marijuana back to Mississippi. I wanted to beat his ass and put him back in that ambulance when they walked him by me, in handcuffs.

I'd have done it all the same, and I'm thankful that I didn't find what I expected to find when I ran off that hill, and even more thankful that it wasn't a family with kids involved, but it amazes me how careless people are. It's also scary how fast things happen and how much what does happen is sometimes out of our control. Had even the smallest thing been different, it could've been a completely different outcome for us.

Glad everyone was ok. I would have had the same feelings toward those guys as well. Terrible.

You did the right thing.

I was driving home tonight with my two daughters following behind me in the wife's van. I noticed a guy drifting from lane to lane. As I passed him on the left I could see he had his phone in his hand. I honked the horn at him while passing him then he cut over right behind me about running my daughter off the road. She had to slam on the brakes. I could have beat his face in if he would have wrecked her

PRB, you did the right thing to stop and help. If we had any idea of he things that pass us on the interstate - drugs, human trafficking, etc., I think we'd all be shocked by what's going on.

We ran over to Villa Rica from the cabin yesterday and saw that mess on I-20 and decided to take the long, peaceful way home via old 78 highway and now I'm glad we did.

You did the right thing regardless. Glad you're OK.

I did something similar one year at the beach when the rip tides were really bad. Me and this other lady swam out to save this gal and her young daughter from drowning after her boyfriend came over to me and ask me to do something because he couldn't swim! WTH? The lady rescued the daughter who was close to the beach and I swam out and got the gal calmed down and holding on to my back and brought her back in.

Once on the shore I could have whipped both their asses when I realized they were both (Her and her "boyfriend") drunker than Cooter Brown. No one should have been out there that day, much less when you've been drinking. Mrs. Irish thought I was Aquaman for about month after that, so at least I got brownie points with her. grin

Did you tell the police about the marijuana?

Yes. They found it, along with a duffel bag full of pills.

People like them are just stupid. Years ago at a NWTF dinner I was talking to David Abston (Pickens county sheriff) who had just been in the paper about stopping someone on HWY 82 with a backseat full of pot.

I asked why did he stop them and he laughed and said he was in a MARKED patrol car in the middle of the afternoon and was following behind them They were driving the speed limit and everything seems legit. Then the driver tossed out an empty beer bottle. David pulled them over and the grass was on the back seat in plain view. They had put a blanket on it but it has slid off and was in the floorboard.

Why someone doing something illegal would do anything that would draw attention to them is beyond me. I guess if they were smart they would have a real job and not doing stupid things...

I love my country, but don't trust my government.
