we have about a 20 acre field in dove proso, browntop, and sunfloweres.
thinking about planting some of it in wheat, topsewn feed wheat as much as legal.
then letting it grow and burning it next dove season. anybody do this?

Would it be better to use a seed wheat variety? And should i spray it before I burn?
TIA

I personally would just plant more millet and sunflowers.
But if you're going to do it, feed wheat will sprout and grow just as good.

It will probably all be gone before season gets close.

Yep, will dry and be ready to cut in June. You WILL have doves at that time. If you wanted to incorporate into your "dove program" and start drawing birds at that time, probably worth a shot...but don't count on it to still have seed come Sept.

Won't work. Head would have shattered and most likely will be long gone. Nothing but straw left in September

I top sow some wheat for doves every year, and there's always enough left to come up and make a decent deer plot. But I don't have many doves, so your area may be different. You can put out 200 lbs per acre, which is way more than needed for just planting a field. Be advised that feed wheat would be illegal; the rules say it has to be seed wheat. That would be tough for a GW to prove, but the seed wheat is usually only about a dollar a bag more and you won't have as high risk of bad weeds.

I have never had any of the wheat survive more than a few days after maturing. Every critter in the country will come eat it, and I don't have anything. I think a strip for top sown wheat is a good idea in any dove field. I've seen them pass up corn and millet to eat wheat. Good luck!
