We had amazing luck with Red Star we obtained from Murray McMurray a few years back. Our only problem was those chick were de-beaked and we had no idea that was going to be done.

Additionally, we have had very good luck with the Black Australorp and Bard Rock hens. All of those are brown egg layers and we do have some Brown Leghorn hens that lay white eggs but those dang chickens were wild as all get out when we got them....they are still flighty, but much better than they were initially; still not as social as some of the other breeds.

From my experience the Rhode island reds produce very well. In my previous flock I had mainly Jersey giant's and a 2 rr hens . The rr was hands down the best producers. My new flock are production road island reds. From what I've read about them they are supposed to produce 250+.

Golden Comets, very good producers of large brown eggs and the hens are not BIG, takes more feed for those big hens.

Those named are all great producers. White Leghorn holds the record, with 371 in 365 days, and a Black Australorp has laid 364 in 365 days. Mine are Australorps, 8 hens, and they lay more than my family, my son's family, and my parents eat.

This. Very mild mannered hens that are prolific layers of medium/large brown eggs. I bought another 15 chicks today. (Ours are getting a little old.). Coosa Valley Milling had about that many left.

I've been reading about golden comets. Dual purpose birds. Eggs and meat. Sounds like a winner to me.

Rhode Island Reds, Australorp, and Barred Rock are what we have and they produce medium sized eggs almost daily and one of my oldest is still producing at 5yo.

No experience with them but always heard the same about White Leghorns. Note taken on the Golden Comets.

Can someone educate me how live poultry sales are legal right now? We had intended to get chickens (Reds, Australorps, Barred Rocks and Buff Orpingtons) a few weeks ago when the ban hit. So I have been on hold since. ?????

Can't educate you on the legality of the sales. What I can tell you is something changed the last few weeks. I'm on the mailing list for Coosa Valley Milling. A month or two ago, I received an email advertising their annual chick sale. A few days go by and another email comes saying the sale is postponed. Get an email earlier this week with the sale advertised. I went and got them while I could.

As far as flavor in an egg, to me you can't beat a yard chickens eggs. My game hens have a rich orange yolk, not that weak ass tennessee yellow color of yolk. No comparison to me.

For flavor, try some duck eggs.
