I swear every bird I call in has some fun/crazy story that was really a test... I roosted this bird the night before so when I owl hooted the next am, I knew kinda where he was at when he gobbled. After slipping over to him, I was at the crest of a hill on a road leading down to field when he gobbled less than 100 yards in the pines to my left. I knew I needed to go old school so I put my pack down and laid my decoys off to the side of the road before going 10 yards into the pines for my set up. I wanted to get 10 more yards in front to the little crest of the hill so I could see the flat I thought they would land, but I decided it was too risky. Setting the scene: I could barely see the flat at my 12 o'clock due to the down-sloping hill crest but could see the flat to the right of that. To my left, I could only see 20 yards to the hill crest. Every so often when he would gobble, a hen yelped right next to him, so I decided to do the same every so often. Not only did I hear him fly down, I saw the entire flock of 5/6 hens fly down with him to my 2 o'clock on flat around 60 or so yards away! I thought "Man, this just got a lot tougher!" He proceeded to strut and gobble chasing the hens for the next hour and even breeding as well. I let out a couple soft yelps/ purrs every so often to let him know I'm still here. I even had my bead on his head at 55/60 yards but decided it was a bad/unethical shot with all the hens around. Eventually, the hens started taking him way from my 12 o'clock to further left behind the little hill crest. The lead hen would do some soft yelps, so I figured why not cut her off with the same! She became more and more agitated, and next thing I know, the whole flock was coming back with the sweet sound of spittin and drumming at my 11 o'clock accompanied by thunderous gobbles! All of a sudden I hear a cluck behind me on the road proceeded by the sound of something beating the crap out of my dekes LAYING ON THE GROUND! Next thing I know, a 3 or 4" bearded jake walks 5 ft to my right clucking with the gobbler hammering at him! He gets out of dodge so I give the gobbler the silent treatment for 10 min. As soon as I finally caught movement of him, a hen putts which made the gobbler take two steps into a shooting lane with a blowdown blocking his body and head! The last putt made his head go up giving me a shot, and I blasted away. I couldn't see if I had hit him until I saw the wing flapping while running towards him! Ran to him hootin and hollering and praising the good Lord I was so pumped up! 9.5" beard, 1 1/8" spurs, and 25 lbs! (have a pic of the scale to prove it!) Hunt lasted from 5:55 till 7:30 at trigger pull! Praise the good Lord! (Scale pic was taken at an angle...it was directly between 24/26 and even favoring the 26 but just called it 25)
