Last two nights I've had a small dirt hole worked over but they didn't hit the sweet spot. Traps are still bedded securely. This is in separate locations a few miles apart.

Any tips on improving the set ?

On the set I remade this morning I changed the blocking and made the hold larger/deeper. Added some grass to cover the sheeps wool holding the bait.

Looking at the angle the coyote approached from my blocking was not sufficient on the left side and that's the direction he approached from. Kind of had a straight shot into it.

I was watching a video the other day where a guy was using a turtle shell combined with some scent to lure the yotes in. I really want to try this method. Anyways, he talked a lot about picking a spot to set up and why he was choosing it. He made it a point to pick a spot that naturally funneled the yote into his trap. It just really made me think more about the micro spot that I pick. Instead of just picking any good backing, I’m looking for some natural structure to help with that backing. I'm also trying to set a small dirt clod in a certain spot around the trap to guide the critter's foot in. I'm thinking either just behind the trap so it steps over the clod and onto the pan....or just off to the side to guide the foot. I’m still learning too.

Are you sure it’s a yote working the set and not another critter?

Put just a very small amount of lure or bait on each side of dirt hole....maybe 6" to 8" on each side of your baited hole set. You might even just hit a few spots with urine to get him to move around a little more at set! I did this to a set that had been visited before and after doing this...had one in trap next day!

Positive it's a coyote this morning based on tracks, its in a gravel pit thats very sandy.
