somebody give me a good deer round that I can take on an elk hunt. I currently shoot fusions with very good luck on deer but have read they may be to soft for an elk especially at longer ranges.

Don't they make Partitions for that? A Partition, Accubond, or even a Fusion will be fine. I just wouldn't shoot light for caliber bullets.

I have been looking at that ttsx. I don't reload but have heard good things about them. I haven't found any yet but I did find some 165 grain tx or ttx cant remember which. I currently shoot 165s out of it was thinking about going with a 180 until after I go out west and then go back to the 165s. Not real sure. I have thought about nosler partitions and the barnes that 257 mentioned

If I was going to shoot the Barnes it would be a bullet considered light for caliber. They do better with speed. When i said I wouldn't shoot light for caliber bullets,I was only referring to the Partition and Accubond.

You may be over thinking it. I'm not an expert elk hunter,or elk hunter of any kind but I have friends who have hunted elk quite a bit that tell me the locals don't use anything we would consider special to kill elk. One friend tells me lots of locals use a 30-30.

I'd run 165 or 180 grain Partitions or Accubonds and not think twice about it.

If you don't shoot a bunch of deer a year, I'd set that rifle up with 180s and forget it.

Why go into it with any question. Just shoot either 180 Nosler.

I use the federal trophy bonded tip in mine, 180gr. They don't leave a huge exit hole in deer but every deer I've shot with it has DRT. Hunted Moose with it a few years ago and it worked great for that. Took it to Africa and killed everything from spring buck to zebra and only the zebra took more than one shot but that was my fault because I hit it to low the 1st shot.

This^^^^. Good googly moogly that will be a nasty critter slayer. 165 would be good also.

Stay far away from NBT, SST, or any other light jacketed bullet. I know from (bad) experience.

I got some partitions that are probably 10 years old. They are 165 grain. Would you sight the gun in to those and not worry with it or would you go ahead and get some 180s.

Personally,I would load up both and choose depending on which shoot best.

The 165 partitions should be good for anything in the states that you will encounter.

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

165's would do. So would 180's. Shoot them and see which hits paper better.
