This may be a dumb question but if the site has water in it would you put it in there anyways or on the side? My guess is it would get rooted in there anyways Absolutely. If the site has water use the high saturation rated cald. It's the yellow bag stuff.

Well I think I will stay away from the calds may be too pricey and or dangerous. I am mainly referring to trophy rock/trace mineral salts etc Find some clay soil in a moist area and add either salt or trace mineral salt. I just use a 50 lbs trace mineral block that I set on a little slope and allow the rain water to wash it downhill to a little hole. I think the deer prefer the mineral to be in certain concentration range in the soil…..not too strong, not too weak,etc…..The heaviest used area is not around the block and not in the hole at the bottom, but rather along the slope between the two points. They are using the lick pretty heavily again now that spring is here. If I were to go dump a big bag of salt on the whole lick right now it would likely shut it down for a little while….been there done that.

I have used trophy rock before and the killed that. I got a great idea to use a 5.99 cow mineral block thinking it would do the same thing and they barely got touched. I see trophy rock has some kind of bag to pour out and it's cheaper than the rock and is about 30 lbs so I am curious on its results but again didn't know whether to dump it around the hole or just pour it in even if its holding water I’m pretty sure that the deer prefer to intake minerals within a certain tolerance level in the soil. Kinda the same way we prefer to intake salt. I think the reason that some of the bagged stuff or trophy rocks you buy gets quicker hits on a new hole is because it is in a lighter concentration than what a pure mineral block or bag of granules would be. The biggest key is to pick the right soil conditions……heavy clay with some moisture. You could even dig a hole a bury one of the salt blocks so that it leaches into the soil around it. Clay holds minerals better than sand or silt. They aren’t gonna hit a spot with a salt block immediately though. It takes time for it to leach into the soil. The idea is to get a lick started and then refresh it from time to time. I usually just set a new block at the top of the hole after each deer season is over. I haven’t even added one this year yet and their working the ground over anyways because of the mineral content in the soil.

Plain salt is the only thing you can legally hunt over.
The best mineral you can put out is one bag of mineral salt mixed with 1/3 bag of HI-MAG. There is nothing that will draw them any better and it provides what they need.

Along with Trophy Rock. That is still in question. It depends on who you ask. I emailed dcnr enforcement in Montgomery last year and was told only plain salt.

So again, there's a gray area that should be clarified by DCNR, announced to the public and then enforced (if need be, or is possible). And instead there's confusion, "I was told..." and "But they told me ..." scenarios and a bunch of silliness because no one will address and finalize the question. Just like corn.
