What's the deal with all the forced U-turns that have been engineered into the beach boulevard in Orange Beach. You can't simply turn left into several of the most popular locations. Instead, you have to drive PAST your desired location and make a U-turn to go back.

Mostly to stop folks from turning across on coming traffic plus to keep traffic flowing. Traffic is horrible during the summer and more things are in the works to help ease it up some.

You obviously have never been down Highway 280 in Inverness lately. It was re-engineered in the same way and has greatly alleviated the traffic issues. I mean, it's still 280, but it's better than it was, and we didn't have to pay for some crazy elevated skyway.

Or New Orleans. It drives me crazy. There are very few places where you can turn, your drive thru the intersection then u turn. There are also places where there is no light and you drive thru a traffic circle.

Some dumb ass traffic engineer's idea of "progress"

The reason for it is because azzhats won't stop turning left into an intersection when there is no room for them. And often that is because other bigger AZZHATS won't stop turning right when the oncoming traffic has a left turn arrow.

So to boil it all down to just the facts mam.

It's because there's too many people and people are azzhats.

Exit 11 in Montgomery (chantilly) is the biggest cluster I've ever seen

+1000000. It has helped 280 tremendously.

I was on 280 last night and it threw me for a loop. I haven't been up there in quite a while so wasn't expecting that. I'll take the locals word on it helping traffic flow. I'm not at neither 280, or orange beach enough to know if it does or not.

This.

It has also served to reduce the number of traffic accidents and the severity of those that do happen. I lived down that highway for a decade and moved shortly after they started reducing the number of traffic lights. It made a tremendous difference. I'll add this, every new traffic light added causes an explosion of accidents. I hear them and run emergency on them. They need to replace as many as possible with the u-turn intersections. I cannot tell you how many major (and minor) accidents happen in front of Walmart in Chelsea as well as the one in Inverness.

It's made me scratch my head, but I know the ones that are paid to design it are a more educated than me on the issue.
I'm really glad to hear that it's helped 280 so much. Maybe there is hope for beach road.

The one that got me is you can't turn left past the shopping center to go over to Canal Road. You go past the intersection about half a block, hang a U and go back. Seemed pretty funky. We'll see.

I agree completely. I was down in Montgomery yesterday for work and stayed in a hotel right there. It sucked.
